Madame Ink is a video slot from Play’n Go that is built around a 5-reel, 3-row format. There are 243-ways-to-win and players can spin the reels from between 0.10 and 100 credits per spin. Madame Ink has an RTP of 96.21%, and bonuses and features include wild reels, transforming symbols and free spins.
Play’n Go aren’t overly well-known for their 243-ways-to-win games, which is why it’s refreshing to see the game developer choosing a slightly different direction in one of their latest releases - Madame Ink. This unique-looking game is based around a Chinese tattoo artist, and everything from the design of the game to the bonuses and features is built to be as theme-relevant as possible.
Format and Theme
As mentioned, Madame Ink uses a 243-ways-to-win mechanic, so there are no conventional paylines. Instead, wins are formed by matching a 3-of-a-kind, 4-of-a-kind or 5-of-a-kind combo of symbols from left-to-right; the positioning of these symbols doesn’t matter. Madame Ink has five reels and a total of three rows, and you’ll find yourself able to stake from as little as 0.10 credits per spin. High-rollers will be pleased to learn that they can wager as much as 100 credits every spin too, so there’s plenty of stake options here for you to take advantage of!
When it comes to the design - Play’n Go has really nailed it with Madame Ink, we feel. Like some of their other hit games - Book of Dead and Reactoonz are great examples - the theme is quite “out there”, and the graphics, sounds and animations all align perfectly with the game. A soothing Oriental soundtrack accompanies every spin, and you’ll see what looks to be a Chinese alleyway in the backdrop, dimly lit, setting a relaxing and somewhat mysterious theme.
RTP and Volatility
Madame Ink has an RTP of 96.21%, and this is pretty decent for today’s online gambling world. However, we should point out that the vast majority of Play’n Go’s slots are offered to online casinos in multiple RTP settings, so you’ll likely want to make sure that you’re playing the best RTP version possible to ensure you’re getting your money’s worth! It is also a medium variance slot.
Madame Ink’s Symbols And Payouts
In keeping with the unique Oriental theme, Madame Ink features a variety of symbols - all of which are themed perfectly and really compliment the overall aesthetics of the slot. The lower-paying symbols in Madame Ink are all represented by playing card suit values; this includes a club, a heart, a diamond and a spade. These are beautifully-designed and look great on the parchment-like backdrop that all the slot’s symbols appear on.
The higher-paying symbols are all a bit more theme-specific, and you’ll find a number of Chinese-inspired tattoo designs, including a Bird, two different variations of a Dragon’s Head, and a Roaring Red Dragon. It’s the latter of the symbols that’s worth the most money in Madame Ink, and landing three, four or five of him will award a payout worth 0.2X, 2X and 5X your stake respectively.
There’s a couple of other symbols to be aware of too when playing Madame Ink, and the first is the Ink Bottle. This is Madame Ink’s wild symbol, and it substitutes for all other symbols in the game. It also has its own paytable, meaning lining up a 5-of-a-kind combo of the wild symbol awards a payout worth 5X your stake. Furthermore, the Ink Bottle is key to triggering one of the bonuses and features - details of which we’ll cover in the next part of this Madame Ink review.
You’ll also notice a Goldfish symbol on the reels; this is known as a “Mystery Symbol”, and while it doesn’t have its own paytable, it does contribute to one of the bonuses and features, which we’re going to be taking a look at now.
Madame Ink Bonus Features
It’s clear, in today’s fast-paced online gambling world many players are looking for a plethora of bonuses and features - and Madame Ink doesn’t disappoint in this respect. You’ll find a number of bonuses and features in the game, and below, we’re going to be taking a look at what these are, how they work - and what you can expect when they’re activated!
Wild Ink Feature
The Wild Ink feature is triggered randomly on any spin during the base-game. When it activates, you’ll see an ink bottle appear on your screen, and this then expands one, two, three, four - or all five - reels into wild reels. You are then paid out accordingly, and if you’re lucky to transform all five reels into wild reels - well, let’s just say you’re going to be walking away with a pretty monstrous payout!
Madame’s Mystery Feature
The Madame’s Mystery feature is triggered by landing the stacked Mystery symbol on the middle reel. This symbol is Madame Ink herself (the one with a tattoo on her back. When this activates, she will transform into a stack of three high-value tattoo symbols. What’s more, all of the other mystery symbols on the screen transform into the same higher-paying tattoo symbol - so it’s possible to form some pretty healthy-sized wins here, even if they are somewhat rare.
From our experience, the Madame’s Mystery feature is much harder to trigger than the Wild Ink feature - which seems strange, given that it doesn’t offer as much win-potential.
As with many Play’n Go slots, Madame Ink comes packed with a free-spins bonus round and this is triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view. Doing so will award you with a payout worth 5X your stake, and you will then get to choose one of three different free-spins options, which we’ll cover below:
- 3 Free Spins: Choose this option, and both the Wild Ink feature and the Madames Mystery features are active. This is where the most win-potential is found, although it’s also the most volatile of the three free-spins options.
- 6 Free Spins: If you choose the 6 free-spins option the Madame’s Mystery feature is active on every free spin.
- 12 Free Spins: If you opt for the 12 free-spins option, the Wild Ink feature is activated when a wild lands anywhere in view. This is the lowest variance version of the free-spins bonuses.
It’s not possible to re-trigger any more free-spins from within the bonus round - so the three free spins option really is volatile. It is, however, as mentioned, where the most win-potential lies!
Our Verdict Of Madame Ink
While some players may be rolling their eyes at yet another Play’n Go slot that’s only capable of dishing out a maximum win of 5,000X, Madame Ink is a decent effort from the well-known game developer - and we think it’s fair to say they really have gone all out when it comes to the visuals of the game. The artwork found in Madame Ink is fantastic, and they’re really well done - giving the game a nice look, and ensuring that you, as player, are captivated from the moment you begin playing.
Looking beyond the visuals of the game, we’re also pretty impressed with the bonuses and features packed into Madame Ink. The reel modifiers are more than capable of dishing out decent-sized wins, and the base-game is full of action - something that can’t be said for a lot of video slots in today’s world. We also really like the fact that you’re able to pick and choose which reel modifier is in action - again, a feature which is seldom seen in video slots today.
To unlock the big win-potential in Madame Ink you’ll need to land the five wild reels during the Wild Ink feature. Do so, and you could well find yourself walking away with a win close to that 5,000X cap - but, as with any slot, wins of this size are rare - so you’ll have to hope to catch the slot on a lucky day!
