Introduction

Peter and Sons is an Armenian company and one of many new developers who have signed up to Yddragsil’s programme to help new enterprises establish themselves. It is through this association that they have gained access to the Gigablox technology, which makes the reels more versatile. Partly as a result of this connection and partly through sheer inventiveness, Peter and Sons slots are earning a distinguished reputation for innovation and fun. Monster Blox is one of many demo slots in the very loose sub-genre of monster games, like WorldMatch’s Space Monsters slot, but it has a very idiosyncratic character of its own.

Monster Blox has 6 reels, 4 rows and a possible 729 win ways. At 6x4, there are 40 paylines paying from left to right. The grid expands to 6x5, 6x6, 6x7 and 6x8 at certain points. The minimum bet size is 0.20 and the maximum is 100. There are 8 regular symbols: 4 monsters coloured red, purple, green and blue, plus the four playing card suits. There is also a respin symbol, a wild, a free spins symbol and multipliers.

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

The graphics are terrific. There’s a really appealing eccentricity and detail to the illustrations, animation and even the movement of the reels. The wizard is a great creation and the monsters, while hardly menacing, are fascinating to look at. The anodyne musical soundtrack lets it down a little, but generally it’s a good piece of work.

Monster Blox RTP and variance

The game’s RTP is 96 per cent, which is precisely on the average. The variance is high.

How to play Monster Blox

  1. The first screen upon loading is where you can set your bet before proceeding to the playing grid. Use the plus and minus buttons to adjust it.
  2. Press the large Play button or the space bar to spin the reel with the current bet. It turns into a fast-forward button, which you can press to stop the reels at will.
  3. Click on the three-line menu box to call up the reference page, which describes the different game components.
  4. The balance is displayed at the bottom left of the screen.
  5. 1 to 3 wilds can land at random on any reel. They substitute for any other symbol except the scatter.
  6. The scatter pays in any position on the reels. If 5 or more scatters land, the Monster Free Spins bonus is triggered.
  7. The base game contains a Monster Respin feature with a panel that grows with each respin, along with a Wild Bounty feature.
  8. If Monster Respins and Monster Free Spins are activated at the same time, the respins will play first, followed by the free spins.
  9. If more than 5 scatters land during a Monster Respin, these are added to the total number of free spins.
  10. Gigablox are the oversized symbols which function as individual symbols in formations from 2x2 to 6x6. Scatter symbols can land as Gigablox.
  11. Click on ‘Buy’ to buy free spins at a cost of 70x the current bet.
  12. We encourage you to play gambling games responsibly, and if you are playing for money, make sure you stay within the limits of what you can afford to lose. When it stops being fun, you should quit.

Monster Blox bonus features

Monster Respins

Each win in the main game awards a respin. During the respin, the panel expands with one row (6x5) and 15 additional paylines. Each new win will award an additional respin, and the panel will grow by another row and 15 additional paylines. The maximum panel size is 6x8 with 100 paylines. Respins are awarded until there are no wins. Random wild placements (Wild Bounty) are awarded during respins and can be placed on any symbol size.

Wild Bounty

During any spin in the base game, the hunter can transform any symbol into Wilds. Gigablox symbols also have a chance to be transformed. In Monster Free Spins, the Wild Bounty occurs more frequently and always in no-win spins.

Monster Free Spins

The number of free spins awarded equals the number of scatters in the panel when triggered. Monster Free Spins are played with the same bet as the activating spin on a 6x8 panel and 100 paylines. Each Scatter symbol that lands on the reels in Free Spins adds 1 additional Free Spin. Each scatter increases the Monster Multiplier. The Wild Bounty feature appears more often during Monster Free Spins and appears during no-win spins to guarantee a win.

Monster Blox review: our verdict

There’s no real bonus game, but there’s plenty of interest in the base game, free spins and respins, particularly with the constantly expanding and contracting grid. It’s not complex, but there’s lots of variety and a decent RTP, and it looks great.

FAQs

What does RTP actually mean?

RTP means Return to Player. The calculation indicates the average percentage a player might receive back. This is based on calculations of all win levels, which means that the level of player losses will always be higher than any substantial wins.

What does variance mean?

Variance is a term originally used in poker that is now applied to slots. It is an indication of the frequency and size of payouts. High-variance games will give big rewards but rarely, while low-variance games pay small and often.

Are the spin results genuinely random?

Yes. Random number generators spin the reels. There is no human involvement, and the algorithms make human intervention impossible.
