Introduction

Gold Coin Studios is based in Reno, Nevada. It was launched in 2018 and is run by a former Vice President of IGT. In the relatively short time since they started operating, Gold Coin Studios demo slots have started to make a considerable impact, and their contribution to the range of available free slot games is growing all the time. This pirate-themed game follows closely in the footsteps of others like NetEnt’s Rage of the Seas. It’s very familiar gaming territory, so we’ll see what Gold Coin have added to the genre, if anything.

Silver Seas has 5 reels, 3 rows and 20 paylines. The minimum bet size is 0.20 and the maximum is 120. There are 8 regular symbols: a gold cannon, a silver cannon, a bronze cannon and a group of all three, two crossed swords, a bottle of rum, a spade and a diamond. The wild is a ship’s helm. The scatter is a coin engraved with a skull and crossbones.

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

Gold Coin have chosen to go for a fairly minimal look. The background doesn’t feature much that we recognise from pirate mythology - no desert island, no ship, no treasure chest. Instead we appear to be in a secret cave, lit by flaming torches but otherwise deserted. Above us, we can just see the edge of the free spins wheel decorated with a skull and crossbones.

The grid is simple, with the reels dark blue in keeping with the look of the game. The symbols are disappointingly boring - lots of cannons and no human figures.

The animation is fairly unremarkable, and the music has very much a boys’ own pirate sound to it. It’s a workmanlike creation that is fairly entertaining, although it probably won’t hold your attention for very long.

Silver Seas RTP and variance

The game’s RTP is 96.24 per cent, which is just above the average. The variance is medium.

How to play Silver Seas

  1. There are two buttons with coin icons. Use the plus button to increase the bet and the minus one to decrease it. To the left of the grid, you’ll see how this adjustment relates to the scatter paytable.
  2. Press the large Play button to spin the reel with the current bet.
  3. Click the autoplay button at the top right to call up the autoplay menu. Here you can select a number of automatic spins from 10 to 100. You can set a loss limit of 4, 6, or 8, or leave this option alone. You can also set a single win limit of 10, 20, 50 or 100, or leave it clear.
  4. Click on the three-line menu box to call up the reference page, which describes the different game components.
  5. The balance is displayed at the bottom left of the screen.
  6. All wins begin from the leftmost reel and pay left to right only on adjacent reels, except for scatters, which pay in any position. Only the highest win per line is paid.
  7. The wild substitutes for all symbols except free spin symbols and coin symbols.
  8. If 3 or more scatter coins land on the reels, they will award a cash prize. The coin symbol can land on any reel.
  9. Please make sure you always play gambling games responsibly. If you play for money, make sure you keep within the limits of what you can afford to lose. When it stops being fun, you should end the game.

Silver Seas bonus features

Free Spin Symbol

The Free Spins Scatter symbol is a pirate ship bearing the letters FS on its sail. The symbol appears on reels 2, 3 and 4 only. If 3 free spin symbols land, you win one spin of the free spins wheel. 3 free spin symbols also award 1x the total bet.

Free Spins Wheel

Each segment of the free spins wheel carries both a number of free spins and a multiplier. The multiplier will be applied to all wins except coin symbol wins. Free spins may be retriggered. The number of free spins awarded on a retrigger is equal to the initial trigger.

Silver Seas review: our verdict

Once you get past the slight disappointment of the visualisation, you’ll find there’s a reasonable amount going on. The free spin wheel is an imaginative way of revamping a common feature, but the most interesting aspect is probably the multiplier feature, in which you can watch the meter gradually filling up as you play, leading to potentially significant prizes.

FAQs

What does RTP actually mean?

RTP means Return to Player. The calculation indicates the average percentage a player might receive back. This is based on calculations of all win levels, which means that the level of player losses will always be higher than any substantial wins.

What does variance mean?

Variance is a term originally used in poker that is now also applied to slots. It is an indication of the frequency and size of pay-outs. High-variance games will give big rewards but rarely, while low-variance games pay small and often.

Are the spin results genuinely random?

Yes. Random number generators cause the reels to spin as they do. There is no human involvement, and the algorithms make human intervention impossible.
