Introduction
Every once in a while, game developers choose to “mix things up” and release a slot which may not necessarily fit into today’s fast-paced iGaming landscape. Ultra Hold and Spin is a great example of one such game, and this new release from Pragmatic Play takes heavy inspiration from an old-school one-armed bandit slot machine - there’s little going on, but Pragmatic have managed to include a slight twist on the classic, thanks to a nifty little feature.
In this Ultra Hold and Spin review we’re going to be taking a comprehensive, in-depth look at what the game has to offer; we’ll kick things off with a look at the game’s symbols and payouts, followed by a look at what bonus features Pragmatic have managed to incorporate into the game. To finish things off we’ll give you our honest opinion of the slot, and we’ll also answer a few commonly-asked questions about the game.
Format and RTP
The game itself was first released on the 8th August 2020 and is available to play at virtually all online casinos carrying Pragmatic Play’s game range. The slot is built around a 3-reel, 3-row format and there are just 5 fixed paylines; you cannot increase or decrease the number of paylines in play.
Despite its old-school look, Ultra Hold and Spin aims to appeal to a wide variety of players, and one of the first ways in which it achieves this is by ensuring players on all budgets can spin the reels. Ultra Hold and Spin can be played from as little as .05 coins per spin, and high-rollers can wager up to 250 coins on every spin too!
Visually, it’s not the most incredible-looking slot we’ve ever seen, but Pragmatic Play haven’t done a bad job by any means; it’s clear that they’re trying to capture a certain style (something we’ve seen in the past from other mainstream game developers like NetEnt and Microgaming), and we think it’s fair to say that Ultra Hold and Spin will probably appeal more to those players who don’t like all the bells and whistles attached with today’s feature-crammed slots.
Ultra Hold and Spin’s Symbols And Payouts
As you can probably imagine by now, Ultra Hold and Spin is designed around an old-school slot machine, and fittingly, the symbols are all in-line with this theme too. On the reels, you won’t find any playing card values; instead, the symbols include an “X”, Cherries, Oranges, Plums, Stars, Strawberries, Watermelons, “BAR” symbols and 7’s.
The 7 is the game’s top-paying symbol, and lining up a 3-of-a-kind combo will award a payout worth 62.5X your stake. It’s not the biggest payout in the world, but it’s not bad for a 3-reel slot! Ultra Hold and Spin also has wild symbols which appear on all three reels - and we’ll talk more about them in the bonuses and features section below.
Ultra Hold and Spin Bonus Features
Despite the old-school design Ultra Hold and Spin does actually have a couple of features going for it - although you won’t find any free-spins bonuses or "pick me bonus" rounds like you would in many of today’s slots. Let’s take a look “under the hood” to see what Ultra Hold and Spin has to offer players!
Expanding Wilds
As we mentioned in the previous section, wild symbols appear on all three reels, and they substitute for all other symbols in the game, making it slightly easier to form wins. (The only exception is the “Money Symbol”, which the wild doesn’t substitute for.) However, the wilds have a little trick up their sleeve; if they land and help form a winning combination the wild will expand to cover the entire reel it landed on, giving you even more chances to form winning combinations.

Re-Spins
Ultra Hold and Spin is really about the re-spins feature, and while it’s not a free-spins bonus, it does offer some pretty entertaining gameplay. If you manage to land three of the Money symbols in view you’ll trigger the game’s re-spin feature, and you will then be awarded with 4 re-spins. The symbols that triggered the re-spin feature lock in place, and if you land any additional Money symbols in view the number of re-spins you have left will “reset” back to 4. Doing so will also increase your win multiplier, and it’s possible to win up to 500X on a single spin during the re-spins.
Our Verdict Of Ultra Hold and Spin
Ultra Hold and Spin is unconventional, there’s no arguing about that. Pragmatic Play are clearly trying to hold on to the part of the iGaming market who are fed up with never-ending Megaways slots, and while the game is pretty basic it does feel quite fun when you play it.
We do really like the fact that Ultra Hold and Spin has a re-spin feature - and although it sounds different to what it actually is (you’d assume you’d be able to choose which reels to hold before respinning) it can offer some semi-decent wins of up to 500X.
