Age of the Gods: Ruler of the Sky
Based on the Greek myths, the Age of the Gods games have more than made up for the loss of the Marvel licences. And the 2018 release of Age of the Gods: Ruler of the Sky looks set to continue that success. It's based on Pegasus, the winged horse of mythology, beautifully drawn in this game and set against a vivid blue sky. Pegasus was the offspring of Poseidon, God of the Sea, and Medusa (bad hair day - snakes, remember?).
Meanwhile, the Age of the Gods franchise has shot from nowhere to challenge the all-time greats. Let's look at how and why.
Age of the Gods: Ruler of the Sky - Stunning Graphics
Great gameplay and truly brilliant graphics have helped this title to instant popularity. The opening screen of an interlocking set of images of Pegasus is like one of those tiled puzzles you see. We're on top of Mount Olympus, and clouds are scudding across in the background. The colour palette is excellent and obviously carefully designed - no garish technicolour blobs here.
Once you spin, the background changes to a rich purple with highlights of gold. The symbols are all in keeping with the theme, and the detail on the drawing is brilliant. The Greek vase, for example, isn't just a shape: it's a beautifully drawn vase with figures on it. Similarly, the helmet, harp and classical temple are realised in detail, with glints and gleams of light adding to the effect and making the symbols look almost 3D.
There's plenty of animation too - Pegasus gallops when he appears on the reels, and winning symbols pulse. We love the way that when you get a winning line the other symbols fade to black, so you just see your win line, and a gold-framed button counts up your win total on screen. The total then drops down to the Win box - very effective.
Wild Horses Won't Drag You Away from This Awesome Game
Age of the Gods: Ruler of the Sky, is a five-reel video slot with 40 paylines. Pegasus is wild, of course, and our beautiful steed pays 1,000 coins for five appearances, 200 for four and 50 for three. The wild can be stacked on any reel and substitutes for all symbols in the game except for the scatter.
The Greek temple is the highest-paying symbol: 5 = 400; 4 = 100; 3 = 30. The harp, helmet and vase all pay the same: 5 = 250; 4 = 70; 3 = 15.
When it comes to the playing cards, the Ace and King pay the same: 5 = 150; 4 = 50; 3 = 30. The Queen and Jack pay the same: 5 = 150; 4 = 30; 3 = 5. The ten and nine pay the same: 5 = 100; 4 = 20; 3 = 5.
Mighty Pegasus Feature
The scatter is a golden laurel crown with the game's name inscribed across it. It can only appear on reels two, three or four. Get three of these in a row on adjacent reels and you start the Mighty Pegasus game feature with free spins. There are more Pegasus wilds in the feature free spins games, so you've got extra chances to win.
Now, one thing we slotsters like is when free spins allow you to win more free spins. That's very much the case here - in fact, in theory you can go on winning free spins indefinitely. As Playtech says, the sky's the limit. What's more, if you land three of the golden laurel scatters on adjacent reels in the free games feature, you win five more free games! That's the kind of gameplay that has made these slots so successful. It's not the most complicated game, but it does the right thing by the player and has enough features to make play interesting.
There are a number of Playtech jackpots when the game is played for money, but every game's a jackpot when you're playing for free!
Betting on Age of the Gods Ruler of the Sky
Down at the bottom of the screen you'll see the game's dashboard. Unlike some games where you can set the bet size, here you adjust the number of paylines you want to play using the plus and minus keys under the Lines box. Reducing the lines will automatically reduce the size of your total bet. At just one payline, your total bet will be 0.01. If you increase the number of lines (the maximum is 40), you'll see the size of your total bet increase.
However, you can also use these controls independently, leaving the lines at your selected number and then increasing the total bet on those lines.
Adjusting the Controls
These are very simple - for Autoplay you can choose 10, 25, 50 or 99 spins or choose to play until a feature is activated. This game doesn't have the ability to set limits on the amount you've wagered or to stop when you reach a certain level of coins,, as some games do. Activating Turbo mode is pretty simple too - big button marked Turbo!
The Age of the Gods Franchise
Playtech have built up the Age of the Gods franchise very quickly, and if you love their titles, you'll find plenty of others to add to your favourites right here at Slots Temple. Playtech Jackpots aren't available in free play, but there's plenty of excitement in this magnificent series.
The granddaddy of them all is the original Age of the Gods slot. This is where we get introduced to the cast of characters that will feature in their own titles later on. There are Zeus, Hercules, Poseidon and Athena. With a bonus game, multipliers and huge possible winnings, this slot has become an instant classic and is still the most popular in the series.
Age of the Gods: Goddess of Wisdom has the lot: fantastic graphics, bonuses and features and major jackpots. Needless to say, on the Intro screen the clouds are pink, with this being a Goddess rather than a God! But don't let that fool you, as the Goddess is not at all twee - this is Athena, so show some respect! Her scatter symbol is the owl, bird of wisdom, shown flying in this stunningly realised title. The Goddess of Wisdom Battle Game launches in response to three scatters and has a combination of free games and multipliers.
Age of the Gods: King of Olympus features the main man himself, Zeus, God of thunder, skies and a whole lot of other stuff. To reflect this you'll see bolts of lightning illuminating the blue sky, and on the intro screen Zeus is holding one of them. Pegasus has a bit part in this slot as a symbol. This 25-payline, five-reel slot has a random bonus feature and multipliers of up to x100. The Zeus wild stays locked in the middle of the screen during a bonus game, giving you the opportunity for further wins.
Where there's a King, there's always a prince, and Age of Gods: Prince of Olympus introduces us to Hercules, son of Zeus. Hercules had to carry out a series of tests called The Twelve Labours, and there are plenty of references to these in this slot. He had to steal golden apples, capture a boar and teach the three-headed Hound of Hell, Cerberus, how to walk to heel. Cerberus is on the reels, looking a bit vicious. And by the way, we're going to need another dog lead. Make that three. The graphics in this title glow with rich colours, and this medium-volatility slot has both a Herculean Strength Bonus and a brilliant video game called the Hydra Bonus.
Meanwhile, in Age of the Gods: Medusa and Monsters the artist has really gone to town. The beautiful Medusa appears in a skimpy outfit with some seriously vicious-looking snakes in her hair. Someone should tell her about hair conditioner - works wonders on viper tangles. This game has 164 paylines and six reels. Medusa's Gaze is the bonus feature, and with expanding wilds and scary monsters, seductive sirens and great gameplay, it's definitely worth a visit.
Playtech don't get it all their own way with the Greek Gods and Goddesses, though. If this is one of your favourite themes, take a look at IGT Golden Goddess with the captivating picture of Aphrodite and its features such as Super Stacks with stacking symbols, multipliers and other goodies.
In fact, there's a whole Ancient Greece theme at Slots Temple, where you can browse games such as Zeus, Treasures of Troy, Quest for the Minotaur, Odyssee and others - and, of course, play them all for free.
It's instructive, after a bout of playing Age of Gods slots, to go back to one of the old favourites and compare it.
Rainbow Jackpots slot from Red Tiger has all the familiar themes - a lucky leprechaun, pots of gold, lucky horseshoes, four-leafed clovers and the rest. And that lucky leprechaun can do a whole lot of things with that pipe he's smoking - like launch free spins, make winning symbols appear on the reels by magic and award you a random bonus feature.
After all that Greek mythology, it's quite nice to see some present-day icons - particularly the beer bonus with some luscious-looking pints of what looks like a certain well-known stout! What's more, you can even get a triple beer bonus. Rainbow Jackpots has a sense of humour and a much-loved theme, so it's a great choice for a relaxing free slot session.
Age of Gods: Ruler of the Sky RTP
The Return to Player (RTP) on Ruler of the Sky varies between the different Age of the Gods slots. In fact, Ruler of the Sky has one of the lowest RTPs in the series, at 91.04%. Compare this to God of Storms, which has 96.14%. However, this number shouldn't be awarded undue importance. It's an average calculated over a hundred thousand spins or more. So given the random nature of each spin, you're not going to notice the difference in a normal session between 91% and 96%.
Mobile and Tablet
As with all Playtech titles, Age of the Gods: Ruler of the Sky is optimised for play on both tablet and mobile. iOs, Android and Windows phones and devices are all catered for.
Age of Gods: Ruler of the Sky
This series from Playtech just looks better all the time. The gameplay on Ruler of the Sky is at the simpler end, but it still offers a fantastic gaming experience. It's a worthy addition to the Age of the Gods pantheon.
