Format and Betting Options

Iron Dog Studios is taking a break from their plethora of Megaways releases, choosing, instead, for their next release to be built around more of a conventional slot format. The end result is Blirix Workshop - a 5-reel, 3-row video slot that has 20 fixed paylines in play at all times.

You can spin the reels from between 0.20 and 20 credits per spin, and with up to 7,000X your stake possible to be won on every spin, there’s some fairly decent win-potential to be found within the slot!

Graphics and Theme

One of the things Iron Dog Studios have managed to really get right with Blirix Workshop is the theme; despite the slot’s weird name, the game looks fantastic, and it’s based around the life of a strange, quirky scientist who experiments with magic, spells and options in an attempt at becoming a world-leading alchemist.

Blirix Workshop’s RTP and Volatility

Blirix Workshop is a medium variance slot. When it comes to the RTP, Blirix Workshop ships with a fairly decent RTP of 96%; this is pretty much the industry average in today’s iGaming world, and isn’t bad.

Bonus Features

There’s a couple of bonuses and features within Blirix Workshop - and one of them is a base-game modifier, while the other is a more conventional free-spins bonus. Below, we’ll take a look at how both of these bonuses and features work, and what you can expect when you manage to trigger them yourself.

Magic Book

On the middle reel you’ll notice there’s a special symbol - a Magic Book. This symbol acts as a wild - substituting for all other symbols bar the scatter symbols - and when it lands, it also activates the Book of Spells feature. When this happens you’ll see a giant book appear on screen, and a random modifier is then selected from the book’s pages as they turn.

These modifiers can include:

• Symbol transformations: turning all instances of one symbol on screen into a higher-paying symbol
• Extra wilds: (adding a number of extra wild symbols onto the screen or a multiplier, which can reach as high as 5X.

When a spell is awarded, it’s given a strength rating between one and four. The higher the strength rating, the better your chances of the bonus actually paying - and being decent!

Free Spins

The free-spins is, by far, the bonus round you’ll want to be on the lookout for, as, in our opinion, the Book of Spells feature really doesn't do all that much during the base-game. To trigger the free-spins bonus round you’ll need to land 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view, which awards 10, 15 and 20 free spins respectively.

During the free-spins bonus, all symbols on the third reel get collected into a giant Cauldron - and if you manage to collect 15 symbols, you’ll trigger the Cauldron Combo Bonus. This then places all of the symbols you’ve collected onto the reels.

Now, during the bonus round it’s also possible to trigger the Book of Spells feature - and there’s more spells that can be cast, too. For example:

• all instances of lower-paying symbols on the screen can transform into higher-paying symbols
• more free spins can be randomly awarded
• a multiplier which remains in place for the rest of the bonus is also possible to be unlocked here.

You can also re-trigger the feature by landing another 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view. Doing so awards another 5, 10 or 15 free spins respectively.

Blirix Workshop Review

On the whole, we feel as though Blirix Workshop isn’t a particularly bad effort from Iron Dog Studios.Unfortunately, however, we do have issues with the reel modifiers within the game. From our testing experience, we found that - quite a lot of the time - the reel modifiers within the base-game didn’t actually do anything - i.e. no win was formed as a result of the modification.

Thankfully, the software provider does manage to improve things during the bonus round - and the reel modifiers appear to hit (and contribute towards wins) far more frequently. Still, it’s not perfect, and you will find yourself sitting around watching pointless animations play out quite a lot of the time.

We feel the game would be much better if there were fewer instances of the features landing - but a higher hit rate. Not only would this reduce the amount of time you have to spend watching pointless animations; it would also help to cut out the minor wins, ensuing you’re only winning above-stake when you do hit a win.

Still, it’s certainly not the worst game we’ve ever seen, and we’re confident that Blirix Workshop will enjoy some play-time at least. However, we don’t think it’s going to be a game changer for the software provider, and feel their next release is going to have to be a bit better, mechanics-wise, to really allow them to penetrate further into the iGaming industry.
