Visually, Booming Gems is surprisingly engaging. We appear to be sitting in the driving seat of a spacecraft - think Han Solo or James T Kirk rather than Jeff Bezos or Richard Branson. Our ship is travelling through outer space and although the static background doesn’t give any impression of movement, deep space looks suitably cold and threatening with meteorites and gas explosions coming straight at us as we play.

Once the reels start spinning, the animation kicks in with flashes and explosions and a great charge of electricity from the spin button. Big wins are marked with a huge cascade of coins and spinning searchlights, so there is a lot to watch.

Just when it was going so well, you notice the soundtrack. This is a curiously incongruous kind of retro electro-funk, the like of which has never featured as a science fiction soundtrack. Given the predilection of game developers for cheaply produced electronic music, you might have expected Dragoon Soft to have made a virtue out of this and gone for a full-on borrowing of Kraftwerk or Jean-Michel Jarre. This choice seems entirely inappropriate and represents an unfortunate lapse of judgment, so we suggest muting the sound and supplying your own accompaniment.

How to play Booming Gems

1. Click the spin button or press the space bar to start playing using the current total bet value. 
2. Press the spin button again to stop the reels at any time during the spin.
3. Click menu and settings to activate the space bar as an alternative to the spin/stop button.
4. Click the coins icon to set the bet level; alternatively, use the + and - buttons.
5. Select autoplay, which is next to the main spin button, to enter the autoplay settings menu. This enables you to set the number of spins from 100 to infinity.

This game isn’t the best of Dragoon Soft’s offerings. It looks good, sounds terrible, and only has one feature. The payouts are reasonably generous but it is hard to see why a gamer would choose to spend much time on a game that has the feeling of something that was put together as an afterthought
