Introduction

Farm Family is an uncomplicated game from the dynamic Asian start-up Dragoon Soft. The visualisation of the farm has all the expected imagery of an archetypal farm, very similar to the setting of Push Gaming’s Fat Rabbit slot but without such a prominent central character.

Farm Family has a five-reel grid with three rows and 25 paylines. The minimum bet size is 0.25 and the maximum is 750, with the 25 paylines being fixed. There are just seven regular symbols: aubergine, peppers, carrots, cucumber, basket, grain sack and gloves. The wild is a watering can and the scatter is a basket full of vegetables.

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

The comedy theme music alerts you the minute you load this game that Farm Family is focussed on being slightly silly and having a bit of fun, with xylophones, brass and hillbilly harmonica setting the tone unmistakably. Farm produce, each icon pegged against the board, spins past. Winning combinations resolve themselves into whirling lights and plunge down into the win counter. The bigger wins are celebrated by the sudden appearance of a round, honking pig from beneath a barrel-load of vegetables.

The background is perfectly cheerful, although the speed of the fast-moving clouds suggests that the windmill - yes, there is even a windmill - should be turning much faster. 

It is all very silly but entirely inoffensive; what’s more, it is refreshing to see a developer from the Far East stereotyping Western iconography instead of the other way round.

Farm Family RTP and variance

At the time of writing this review, there is no information on the game’s RTP or its variance. The RTP of Dragoon Soft games is often around or above average (96 per cent), but this is only speculation.

How to play Farm Family

1. Click the spin button to start playing using the current total bet value. Press the stop button, which replaces the play button, to stop the reels mid-spin.
2. Select the main menu and settings to activate the space bar as an alternative to the spin button
3. Click the coins symbol to select a bet level from 0.01 to 30, which will be multiplied by the 25 paylines; alternatively, use the + and - buttons to change the bet level.
4. The auto spin function allows you to select spins from 100 to infinity. 
5. Click the main menu to the bottom left and then the settings cog to bring up various visual and speed of play settings. This is where you have the option to set the autoplay game to stop on a win of a specified minimum level and set maximum balance increase levels and balance decrease levels.
6. The running balance is displayed to the bottom left of the screen.
7. Click the lightning bolt for turbo spin; alternatively, access this in the settings menu.
8. All payouts run from left to right and only the highest win pays. Winning symbols are shuffled and the symbols above will drop to fill the vacant places.
9. Always play responsibly. If you are playing for real money, make sure you stay within the limits of the amount you can afford to lose. When the game stops being fun, it is time to quit.

Farm Family review: our verdict

There is nothing particularly wrong with this game. The animation has a certain goofy charm and the gameplay is straightforward, making it especially good for beginners; however, there isn’t much going on and even the free spins round doesn’t give you the chance to shift to a different setting. It feels as if it is lacking an imaginative level and, as it is intentionally undramatic, you do feel the absence of a bonus game.
