SimplePlay is a game development company that was founded in 2019. It’s run by genuine enthusiasts, and this is usually reflected in the imagination and style of SimplePlay slots. Their portfolio is understandably small at the moment, but their ambition is to create and distribute demo slots as quickly as they can without sacrificing quality for speed. The word ‘candy’ might put you in mind of confectionary-themed games like Stakelogic’s Candyways Bonanza Megaways slot, but this is rather different since the Candy Witch appears to be an incarnation of the evil figure in the Hansel and Gretel story.

The Scatter 1 Symbol is also the witch, the Scatter 2 Symbol is Gretel transformed into a sorceress, and the wild is a jewel set in gold.

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

Set in a dark wood with glimpses of giant lollipops growing menacingly amongst the trees, the grid itself is bright, with symbols in circular frames on a white background. The witch and Gretel stand to either side, and with each spin, they hammer the side of the grid, sending them crashing into each other. Gretel grunts like a tennis player every time she strikes it. It has to be said that the witch’s skimpy outfit seems unwise for a chilly night time scene; Gretel’s dress is much more appropriate. Meanwhile, poor Hansel is stuck behind bars on the reels.

The soundtrack is vaguely Potter-ish and the animation is good to look at. It’s nothing exceptional but perfectly engaging.

How to play Candy Witch

1. Adjust the bet using the plus and minus signs to either side of the Line Bet indicator. You can also select Max Bet to go straight to 60.00
2. Select the Auto Spin menu to choose the number of auto spins from 50 to infinity 
3. Press the Spin button to spin the reels with the current bet. You can also use the space bar to spin the reels. Press the square button to stop the reels.
4. Click on the lightning bolt symbol to enter turbo play mode.
5. The Scatter symbols appear on all reels. If you collect 80 scatter 1 symbols, you trigger Free Game Feature 1. If you collect 60 scatter 2 symbols, you trigger Free Game Feature 2.

Common Rules for Both Free Games

Scatter Symbol meters at the top left and right corners of the grid display the number of scatters collected. If a round of the base game triggers both free game features at the same time, Free Game 1 will start first, followed by Free Game 2. When the free games start, the meters will reset to zero.

Free Game Feature 1

12 free spins are awarded when the game is triggered. Line bet is the same as in the triggering game. Stacked Wilds of 4 appear on each reel during the first spin, up to a total of 240 wilds. 4 more stacked wilds are added with each spin. Spin 1 gives 4 wilds, spin 2 gives 8, and so on in multiples of 4.

Scatter 1 and Scatter 2 symbols will not appear during this feature.

Free Game Feature 2

12 free spins are awarded when the game is triggered. Line bet is the same as in the triggering game. The first spin is played with a 2x game multiplier up to a 24x multiplier. Multipliers are added in increments of 2 for each spin, starting with 1 spin and a 2x, then 2 spins and a 4x, going up to 12 spins and a 24x.

Scatter 1 and Scatter 2 symbols will not appear during this feature. Free Game 1 and 2 can be retriggered during the Free Spins.

Candy Witch review: our verdict

The base game is perfectly acceptable without being especially exciting. It’s a shame there isn’t a genuine bonus game given the richness of the theme’s possibilities. There’s a lot of free spin action, but that doesn’t seem quite the right balance. It’s a mildly diverting game with a decent RTP, but it’s unlikely to keep anyone’s attention for any length of time.
