Caribbean Stud Poker Overview

Step into a live dealer game in this offering generated by Evolution. Here you will play one-on-one with the dealer, unlike other games where you share the table and compete against other players.

The game has been around since the 1980s, when David Sklansky came up with a poker game designed to suit the casino environment. Originally called Casino Poker and introduced at an Aruba casino, it is now universally known as Caribbean Stud Poker.

Once you load the game you are presented with a dealer behind a table bearing the game logo, with a mirrored curtain backdrop giving the impression of a top-floor casino at nighttime. The betting options pop up and are timed, whilst the player can easily follow the steps of the game through the spaces on the table indicating the ante, call and bonus bets. The overall look of the game is slick and appealing.

How to Play Caribbean Stud Poker

Betting Options

First the player chooses their ante bet from a display on the screen which is on a timer. A minimum bet of 50p is available. The cards are then dealt from a single pack which is shuffled after each game. The player receives five upward-facing cards, and the dealer receives one upward-facing card and four turned downwards.

Decide Whether to Call or Fold

At this point the player decides whether to call and play the game or fold their hand. To play you will need to add x2 your ante bet. If you fold you will lose your ante bet. Once you decide to play, a new window will open indicating the state of play and a description of the cards you and the dealer hold. The dealer will then reveal their downward-facing cards. The dealer must have an Ace or King in their hand to continue the game.

How to Win

At the end of a game the hands are compared. You will see the result of the hand explained in the window – for example, “dealer wins, one pair, x1 ante”. The list of call bet rewards and side bets is shown in a window in the top left of the screen at the end of a game.

If you are unfamiliar with hand rankings, they are as follows:

  • Royal Flush – five cards sharing a suit from 10 to Ace

  • Straight Flush – five cards of the same suit in a numerical sequence

  • Four of a Kind – four cards with identical rank

  • Full House – a pair + three of a kind

  • Flush – five suited cards (not in sequence)

  • Straight – five cards in sequence

  • Three of a Kind – three cards of the same rank

  • Two Pairs – two pairs of same-value cards

  • Pair – two cards with the same rank

  • High Card – if none of the above are available

Special Features

Players have the chance to place a 5+1 bet. This allows them to use their five cards plus the dealer’s face-up card to create a poker hand. The minimum winning hand is three of a kind. The bet is optional and does not affect the outcome of the main game. The bet is paid before the dealer reveals their remaining four cards.

Optimal Strategy

Although you should treat each hand differently, there are some aspects of strategy you can bring to Caribbean Stud Poker:

  • If your hand has a pair or better, it should be played.

  • If you do not hold an Ace or King, folding may be best.

  • If you have Ace/King but also match the dealer’s upcard, consider calling.

  • Check the dealer’s upcard – if it’s low and you hold a similar ranking card, playing is an option.

  • If the dealer’s upcard is Ace/King and you hold a Queen or Jack, play the game.

Game Controls

  1. The game controls are clearly indicated on the table, and players will find them easy to use. Bet options appear in an arc with a timer.
  2. Your total bet is shown in the bet window in the bottom left corner.

  3. Once placed, cards are dealt (your 5 visible, dealer 1 up + 4 down).

  4. Choose call (x2 ante) or fold (lose ante).

  5. The dealer reveals their cards.

  6. A window shows both hands with the result explained.

  7. The deck resets, and a new round begins.

FAQs

Does Caribbean Stud Poker have a good design?

Yes, players can feel just as if they have wandered into a land-based casino and wandered up to the Caribbean Stud Poker table. The dealer is ready to play a one-on-one game, and the table clearly shows the game title and the dealer requirements for them to play. The controls are slick, responsive and easy to operate.

What is the 5+1 Bonus in Caribbean Stud Poker?

Players can choose to play this side bet, which has interesting payouts for the potential hands in play. Opt for this if you want to try and create a hand with your cards and the one upturned card dealt once the game is in play. The payouts are indicated in the pay table available, and the result of the side bet will not affect the main game.

Does Caribbean Stud Poker have side bets?

The only side bet available in Caribbean Stud Poker is the 5 + 1 bonus, but it does allow players to enter a separate game where they try to make a hand as described above. The good news is that the rewards for creating a winning hand are higher than those on offer in the main game.

Where do I see the result of a game in Caribbean Stud Poker?

The design of Caribbean Stud Poker means that players can see their cards and eventually the dealer’s once they are turned over. Just to help out, a box appears on the screen explaining how the winning hand was formed and whether the player or the dealer won and how they behaved in the hand.

What are the top prizes in Caribbean Stud Poker?

The best prizes available in Caribbean Stud Poker are produced when the player opts for the 5 + 1 bet during the game as they place bets. The pay table is available on screen, and the top prize, as in most poker hands, is awarded when a Royal Flush is created paying x1,000. All winning hands via this bet pay more than the standard play bets.
