Introduction

In a very short time, Matrix Studios demo slots have begun to appear on casino sites of all kinds, competing directly and vigorously with the free play slots of much longer established developers. Players don’t really care if a developer has been around for one year or 30 as long as the games are satisfying. Here, Matrix are going up against games like the Knights of Fortune slot from their near-contemporary start-up Spearhead Studios.

Knights of Alturia has a 5-reel, 3-column grid with 10 fixed pay lines. The minimum bet size is 0.10 and the maximum is 50. There are 9 regular symbols: the Knight, the Princess, the Armour, the Magic Eye and the five highest-value playing cards. The wild is a white stallion.

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

The synthesizer music is rather anodyne, and the occasional bells sounding will definitely make you think of Christmas. There are milder passages of piano, but on the whole, it sounds a bit characterless.

The backdrop is less detailed than we’re used to seeing with Matrix games. It appears to be some kind of ice palace, but there is no animation and no sign of life. In the Matrix Free Spins round, the same scene remains in the background but is suddenly awash with gold, which makes a nice change but falls short of a complete shift in location.

It does look a little like something that was finished off in a hurry in terms of its appearance, and it suffers for it.

How to play Knights of Alturia

  1. The game is played with 10 fixed paylines that pay from left to right. Wild symbols substitute for all other symbols.
  2. First, set your bet. Open the menu by clicking on the 3 dots. Move the slider to the left for a lower bet and to the right for a higher one. Alternatively, select the options given.
  3. Here you can also access the auto play settings. You may select a number of auto spins from 1 to 100. You can set autoplay to stop on any win, only on a bonus win, and if a single win should exceed a set amount. Auto mode can also be set to stop if your balance decreases or increases by a certain amount
  4. Use the turbo button to switch to fast play mode.
  5. If you select the scratch button, the reels are replaced with a virtual scratch card. Press play. You can now either scratch off the foil with the cursor or clear the whole card by clicking on the magic wand button. Click the ‘slot’ button to return to the main reels game.
  6. The balance counter in the middle of the screen will show you your current balance, and your winnings are displayed on the right.
  7. Click the large circular arrow button to start the reels spinning.
  8. We would like to advise you that it is very important to play gambling games responsibly. If you are playing for money, please don’t wager any more than you can afford to lose.

Knights of Alturia bonus features

Pick and Win

Whenever you land 3 or more wild symbols, you may pick a wild symbol to win a prize.

Matrix Spins

This feature rewards you for winning consecutive spins. When you reach a prescribed number, you are given the choice of a stacked wild or a roaming wild feature. All wins that land during normal spins will contribute to the consecutive count. 4 wins give 12 free games, 5 give 15, 6 give 18 and 7 give 25.

Gamble Feature

Whenever you win, you are given the option to double your winnings by gambling them in a double-or-quits challenge. When you win, click the dice symbol that appears, and you can either choose ‘collect’ to keep the money or click ‘continue’ to gamble the bet amount or the total win. If you guess the correct game symbol, you win. You can continue to gamble until you lose or until you have used up all 5 rounds.

Knights of Alturia review: our verdict

The game follows a recognisable Matrix pattern. That’s fine as far as it goes, and there’s still just enough to keep a player interested. One of the novelties of the Matrix Spin feature in particular is the choice to spin the reels vertically but also horizontally to chase the best outcome. It may only be a cosmetic effect, but it feels like you’re making decisions, which is nice in a game of pure luck. However, Matrix should try to improve their RTP record because they consistently come in below average.
