Introduction

Matrix Studios free slots are usually worth trying out, especially if you are thinking of going on to play with money. As the name suggests, this joins the long-established tradition of jewel themed slots that all regular players will be familiar with. Some may feel that IGT’s Da Vinci Diamonds slot is something of a benchmark for the genre, but we would expect Matrix to bring something of their own to it.

Pretty Diamonds has 6 reels and up to 9 columns with 500,000 potential pay ways. The minimum bet size is 0.20 and the maximum is 100. There are 10 regular symbols: blue, green, red and amber diamonds, as well as the six highest-value playing cards. The wild is a gold diamond and the scatter a turquoise one.

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

Although there are some fairly ugly fonts on display in the cluttered left-hand section of the screen, the background is quite pleasing, with diamond mountains in blues and greens with shooting stars falling to earth. All the symbols are crafted as precious stones, and the only thing we miss is a human character or two.

Musically, it’s unambitious - a low-key electronic figure of neutral tone and atmosphere - but the whole effect is quietly likable.

How to play Pretty Diamonds

1. The game is played with 500,000 pay ways, with all combinations paying from left to right on adjacent reels. Wild symbols substitute for all other symbols.
2. To set your bet, you need to click on the three-dot menu. Here you get a slider, which you can move left to lower the bet and right to raise it. You may select the options given in the boxes for the higher-level bets. 
3. In this menu, you can also edit the auto play settings. You can pick a number of auto spins from 1 to 100. You can set autoplay mode to stop on any win, on a bonus win, and if a single win should pass a set amount. Auto mode can also be set to cancel if your balance falls or increases by a specified amount
4. Use the turbo button to switch to fast play mode.
5. To the top left, you’ll find a Scratch button. When you select this, the reels will be replaced with a scratch card. Once you press play, you can either scratch off the squares one by one or clear the whole card by clicking the magic wand. Click the ‘slot’ button to return to the base game.
6. The balance counter in the middle of the control panel at the foot of the grid will show you your current balance, while your winnings are displayed to the right.
7. Click the large circular arrow button to start the reels spinning.

Pretty Diamonds bonus features

Pretty Fortunes Wheel

The feature is triggered when 4 scatters land on the top of the reels. Each pretty fortunes wheel then spins until a spotlight appears to move on to the next wheel. You can collect the wins from unlimited spins until there are none remaining. When you reach the final wheel, you will win the prize shown on the wheel spotlight. The final wheel spins only once.

Diamond Pot

This is a standalone progressive jackpot. It is split into 3 pots: Mini, Minor and Grand. There is no minimum bet requirement to be eligible. A small amount from the stake is taken and contributed to the three pot pools. The chances of winning the Diamond Pot increase with increasing numbers of bets. The higher the pot values, the greater the chance of winning each pot. When any of the pots are won, it is reset to the reserve pool and will rise again as new bets are placed.

Matrix Spins

This rewards you for winning consecutive spins. When you reach a prescribed number, you are given the choice of a stacked wild or a roaming wild feature. 3 wins give 2 free games, 4 give 6, 5 give 10, 6 give 12 and 7 give 15.

Gamble Feature

With every win, you have the option to gamble your winnings using a "double or quits" feature. Whenever you win, click the dice symbol, then choose ‘collect’ to keep the money or ‘continue’ to gamble either the bet amount or the total win. If you guess the correct game symbol, you win. Pretty Diamonds review: our verdict

As always with Matrix, there are some good features: the scratch card, the gamble and the three jackpots. There’s nothing mind-blowing here, but it’s a solid game with reasonable variety. It's worth a look.
