Theme, Graphics & Soundtrack

The green background houses a strange swirly pattern that doesn’t appear to have much to do with the rest of the theme. Apart from this, most of the effort behind this game appears to have gone into the graphics rather than the gameplay. The reels have an ornate golden frame, adorned with tropical flowers, and all of the icons are similarly detailed and colourful.

There is a cheesily grinning monkey, which may remind older players of the PG Tips adverts. This one wears a crown and is holding out hundreds of tiny bananas in your direction. Difficult to say whether the bananas or the monkey are drawn to scale, but our money’s on the Monkey.

The sound effects sound exactly like 80s classic Donkey Kong, to the point that it’s difficult not to picture rolling barrels. This might be a coincidence. Unfortunately, that almost 40-year-old game is far more enjoyable and feature-laden than Monkey Money.

In case you weren’t clear that monkeys like bananas, they feature heavily throughout the paytable. Of course, the winnings are supposed to be for you—not the monkey! That may or may not be a subtle hint…

How to Play Monkey Money

1. Use the small i button in the top right corner of the screen to view the win amounts for each combination. You don’t need to though, it’s also on the left-hand side of the screen.

2. To play in autoplay mode, use the green settings icon under the main green SPIN button on the right side of the screen.

3. To adjust your bet amount, click or tap the plus and minus symbols either side of Bet in the bottom right of the screen. Or, you can use the stacked coins symbol in the far right to select an amount between 0.2 and 30.

4. To start play, click the large red SPIN button in the bottom right of the screen.

Along the bottom of the screen, you can view your Balance and Last Win amounts. To toggle sound on and off, use the speaker icon on the right side of the screen.

This isn’t really a feature, or at least not a good one, but it is possible that when you spin, you won’t even get three symbols in a line. Thus reducing your chances of scoring a combination win even further, as if having only one row wasn’t damning enough on that score.

Our Verdict

Boongo’s website states that they are slot enthusiasts who like to push boundaries with innovative gameplay and exciting features. They also claim to develop premium HTML5 games using stunning art and cutting-edge gameplay that aims to attract and retain players.

There is no boundary pushing or innovative gameplay, unless you count having only one row and one payline. From whatever perspective you look at the game, that would seem to be regressive.

The trend we are starting to note for one row slots is slightly alarming, not least because it tends to arrive hand in hand with featureless gameplay.

As far as an animal themed slot game goes, it’s likely that this is the most basic you’ve experienced. Which is a shame as there is potential for so much more. Just thinking about the feature possibilities presented by a monkey theme only highlights the complete lack of imagination that has gone into this game.

There are also no features unless you consider a Scatter symbol to be a feature. Apparently, they do offer a level of customisation, so it is to be hoped that potential vendors make good use of this option, and ask for some features. It has to said, many of the plaudits for Booongo do centre on the ‘backend integration’ of their titles, which it seems has been flawlessly executed to the detriment of the user experience.

The single positive we can offer is that once you set the game to Autospin, the wins seem to start coming in. If not thick and fast, they do at least start to appear. It also makes those spins where you don’t even get three symbols in a row, slightly less irritating.
