Developers are always coming up with new ideas for classic slots games. Quite often, they are given a fiery makeover, such as in the sizzling Hot Shot Blazing 7s slot; now, Altea Gaming has decided to update one of its classic games, the original Sparkling Hot, with an all-new Sparkling Hot 2 game.

Theme, graphics & soundtrack

There is nothing very different about Sparkling Hot 2 that makes it stand out from its predecessor. Once again, the sparkling aspect of the game is a bit of glittery animation to advertise winning combinations; however, there is nothing in the way of heat, so it is a bit of a misnomer. The game interface has been streamlined and the game surround has been modernised slightly. Other than this, it looks and sounds exactly the same as the original, complete with generic game sounds.

How to play Sparkling Hot 2

In redesigning the layout from the original Sparkling Hot game, Altea has managed to make it slightly more complex. Follow our step-by-step guide and you will soon be spinning those reels:

1. The coin bet is the first control you come to on your control panel, but you need to head to the coin value first. This sets your stake, which you can refine by placing from one to five coins on each spin of the reels.

2. Press the central spin button when you are ready to start your game. If the game lands a win, you will be invited to collect your prize or gamble it.

3. Autoplay will give you 5, 20, 50 or 100 automatic spins, although you can easily cancel the feature by tapping the stop button. Note that the gamble option remains very briefly available following a win, with accepting the gamble cancelling your remaining automatic spins.

4. The musical note icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen mutes the game sounds.

5. To view the game’s rules and paytable, tap the ‘i’ button in the top right corner. This shows the paytable, but clicking again will progress you through the rules and payline configurations before returning you to the game screen.

Bet sizes & paytable wins

You can play Sparkling Hot 2 from just 0.20 per spin. With up to five coins played on each payline, you have a maximum wager of 10.00 - twice as much as the original Sparkling Hot game. It makes the game appealing to more players, but it is still not going to pull in any high rollers.

There is nothing different about the paytable in this game from the original. Once again, you are required to land three, four or five matching symbols on a payline - or just two in the case of the cherries. The first example of a winning symbol must always appear on reel one, furthest to the left of the screen, with subsequent matches appearing on consecutive reels in accordance with one of the payline configurations. The only exception is the scatter, which pays out in any position.

Sparkling Hot 2 bonus features

As in the original Sparkling Hot game, there is no wild symbol, which means there is no help to be had in landing winning combinations. The only help you will get here is from the cherries, which pay out for landing just two examples on the reels rather than the usual three. If you manage to fill the entire grid with just one fruit symbol, the value of this win is doubled.

- Scatter

There is a scatter symbol, which is represented by a big blue star against a yellow background that really stands out on the reels. It won’t award any free spins, but it will pay out some generous cash prizes worth up to 50x your stake if you manage to land five in view.

- Gamble

Every win at the reels of Sparkling Hot 2 opens up the possibility of doubling it. This is an extremely risky business, so Altea Gaming has made it completely optional. If you are up for the 50:50 risk involved, just tap the gamble button. This takes you to a new screen where a coin spins hectically while the can-can plays out. Select heads or tails from the coins to either side of the spinning one - if you are right, your prize is doubled. You get up to five chances to keep doubling up on your wins, but you are taken back to the main game empty-handed if you get it wrong.

Overall review

As Altea Gaming seems to specialise in fairly classic style slots, we had high hopes for Sparkling Hot 2. This was its chance to ramp up the gameplay by introducing a wild, or even a free spins bonus round. Sadly, this was a completely missed opportunity on the developer’s part. Everything is exactly the same apart from a more complex game interface and a slightly updated frame for the reels.
