The Empress Josephine has long captured the fascination, and hearts, of historians and history enthusiasts alike. While perhaps best known as the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, Josephine was a strong and powerful woman in her own right with an incredible story.
Born Marie Josephe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie in 1763 into a wealthy plantation-owning family on the French colony of Martinique, Rose (as she was known until Napoleon started to call her Josephine) first stormed into the Parisian social scene as a relative outsider.
Through a mixture of natural intelligence, cunning and a good dose of charm and beauty, she rose to be the first lady of France, an Empress to her husband’s Emperor. However, Napoleon was not Josephine’s first husband. She was originally married to Alexandre de Beauharnais, with whom she had two children. Before this marriage she reportedly had affairs with notable French political figures, including one of the leaders of the French Revolution.
She was left widowed after her first husband was executed as part of the Reign of Terror, which also saw her briefly imprisoned. It was after this that Napoleon apparently fell madly in love with her at first sight, and went against the wishes of his family to marry her. She does not appear to have been a faithful wife to him, though, with at least one alleged affair with a handsome French soldier.
Despite affairs on both sides, as well as Napoleon’s long absences while fighting various battles, the two did seem to respect each other. However, Josephine did not produce a Napoleonic heir, although he did adopt her two children. As such, he eventually divorced Josephine in 1810, as he was desperate for a son. While this seemed to have been a painful experience for both of them, it was something Napoleon was set on, as he felt he could not leave his empire with no successor.
He subsequently married Archduchess Marie-Louise of Austria, who, ironically, was Marie Antoinette’s niece. She did manage to give him a son, although he did not actually ever reign for long. Just a few weeks.
Poor Josephine retired to her Chateau Malmaison in Paris, where she died, perhaps from a broken heart, four years later. Napoleon reportedly mourned her passing very deeply.
All About the Empress Josephine Slot
This video slot game gives players a glimpse into her life with Napoleon. Set in the infamous Chateau de Malmaison, the sumptuous background and graphics scream decadence and wealth. This is echoed in the symbols on the reels too. The one to really watch out for is the beautiful Josephine herself.
With five reels, 40 paylines and a host of free bonus games, multipliers and stacked wilds, this is an exciting and engaging game for players of all experience level and ages. The team at High 5 Games have really gone to town, and the game offers a real taste of luxury, not least through the chance to win big.
It has something to offer for everyone, with those wanting the chance to win a decent amount catered for as well as those who like the variety of a lot of bonus features. The beautiful backdrop and music will certainly please even the most discerning gamers. Plus, it is optimised for mobile and tablet devices.
The Empress Josephine Graphics
The graphics in this game really help to set the scene. Players are pulled into a lavish lifestyle where stunning crystal chandeliers, solid gold candle sticks, fine art, jewels, haute couture and other luxury trinkets are part of everyday life.
The Empress Josephine herself is dressed in her finest silk and dripping with jewels. Symbols include what may well have been some of her favourite things, including an ornate tea set, a beautifully designed jewellery box and even a dazzling crown.
Every detail is designed to transport players to 17th century France and the fabulous riches that Napoleon and his bride Josephine enjoyed. Although Josephine was a renowned beauty, it is not clear how accurate her depiction in the game is. Certainly the image used to represent Napoleon is very favourable compared to how he actually looked. Still, it adds to the overall appeal of the game to have two good-looking people on the reels!
The soundtrack is hugely impressive too, with classical violin tones merged with majestic trumpeting. You would not expect anything less really in a game this lavish. It all helps to cement the theme and tone of the game and make it a truly immersive experience all around.
How to Play The Empress Josephine
This game has a lot going on, but it is fairly easy to get to grips with. If you haven’t played many online slots before, then all the options may seem confusing, but they are quite easy to get to grips with after a little practice. Experienced gamers will find many features they are familiar with, but with some new and interesting twists. This certainly isn’t a copy-cat game and stands out in a class all of its own.
There is a panel at the bottom of the reel which helps players keep track of everything, such as number of lines bet on, bet amount per line, winnings and autoplay. The 40 lines can be customised using special arrows, and the amount bet on each line can be altered too.
Once you have set these to your preferences, simply spin to play, or let autoplay do the work for you. This game doesn’t seem to have a max bet feature, where you can state the most you want to bet, so be careful not to bet too much up front, especially until you know how the game works. In the base game, matching symbols will see you win right from the start. The playing card symbols, including Ace, Jack, Queen and King, are worth the least, then come the tea set, jewellery box and statues, which are worth slightly more. Images of Josephine and Napoleon are worth the most, apart from the game logo, which is also the wild. The crown symbol acts as the scatter in this game, offering a gateway to free spins.
RTP of The Empress Josephine
The RTP of this game is 94.9%, which isn’t as high as some big payout games but is still a decent amount. For those not familiar with this type of rating, it unfortunately doesn’t mean you will win 94.9% of the time, but does give a good indication of how often this game pays out. However, it is a theoretical figure so not to be taken at face value.
It also is a medium-volatility game, meaning you can win a medium amount fairly regularly. This is most likely down to the range of bonus features.
However, this game is really entertaining, so even if no big wins are seen, it is still fun to play.
How to Win at The Empress Josephine
There are a wide variety of ways to win in this game. You can bet from 40p to £400 per line, and if Josephine smiles on you it can be worth up to 1,000 coins. There is also a range of other bonus features with Multipliers, Super Stacks and Free Games to keep things really thrilling.
The playing card symbols are worth the least with A and K at 40 coins and Q and J at 30. The tea set and jewel box are 50 coins, while the statue of Napoleon and his famous steed Marengo is 50 coins. If you match the portrait of Napoleon, it is 100 coins, and Josephine is a mighty 200 coins.
There is also a logo of the game, which is the wild and so can substitute for all others apart from the scatter (which is the crown). This offers a whopping 1,000 coins. Definitely worth keeping your eyes peeled for this one!
The Empress Josephine Bonus Features
This game has some fabulous bonus features with the opportunity to win big. The team at High 5 Games have really pulled all the stops out. The super stacks feature randomly displays stacks of mystery symbols which then transform to offer prizes.
In addition, there is the multiplier aspect. This occurs when any of the Josephine or Napoleon portraits or three regal symbols (the tea set, statues and jewel box) appear on over three concurrent reels on a winning line. If this happens, winnings will be multiplied between two and five times.
The wild in this game is a logo of the game itself. Whenever it shows up on the reels, it will stand in for other symbols to form a winning combo, apart from the scatter. If you are lucky enough to get five wilds, then you can net 1,000 coins. Not too shabby.
The other symbol to keep a close eye out for is the beautiful crown. This is the scatter, and it triggers eight free games. In these free games, the multiplier aspect works as before, but the super stacks feature is more generous. Players will be prompted to choose a scatter symbol at the start of the free games, and this will give you one of the highest-paying symbols. If you’re really lucky, you may get Josephine.
Top Win in The Empress Josephine
With so many great bonus features, plus the ability to alter the amount coins are worth up to £400, there are plenty of chances to win a lot in this game. While the base game does not offer as many big win opportunities, it does give a nice steady stream of chances to win, especially if coin worth is maximised.
When the scatter and the wild symbol come into force then there are some serious amounts up for grabs - up to 1,000 coins. So while perhaps not a Napoleonic standard of riches, but not to be sniffed at either. But always remember to only bet what you can afford.
No-Deposit The Empress Josephine
However, before embarking on betting real money, there are plenty of places to try free online slots and demo High 5 slots. These are a great way to familiarise yourself with games and work out betting strategies. For games such as The Empress Josephine with a base game and different bonus features, it is always a good idea to navigate your way around the game first.
This is particularly good advice for new players. It is never wise to bet with real money from the off. In fact, even those who think they are experienced and know all about online slots would do well to try games for free first. It can’t do any harm and could save a lot of money and aggravation in the long run.
