- Very volatile machine
- Low RTP of 95%
Bulgarian software provider, Silverback Gaming, are back with their latest release - The Golden Sail - which is being released across Relax Gaming’s Silver Bullet gaming platform. In this The Golden Sail slot review, we’re going to be giving you an in-depth, impartial and comprehensive look at what the game has to offer - and what you can expect.
Format and Betting Options
This cool-looking slot is built around a 5-reel, 4-row format, and you’ll find 40 fixed paylines in place. Players can spin the reels from between 0.40 and 40 credits per spin - so there’s plenty of stake options for you to choose from.
Graphics and Theme
The Golden Sail is built around a pirate theme - although we should point out that the slot doesn’t really resemble this, graphics-wise, instead, looking more like a Steampunk kind of slot - think along the lines of NetEnt’s Steamtower or Yggdrasil’s Cazino Zeppelin. Still, Silverback Gaming has done a great job with the game’s graphics, and they look super clean, smooth - and it’s really easy-to-play.
The Golden Sail’s RTP and Volatility
The Golden Sail is a highly volatile slot, and even Silverback Gaming themselves note that it’s one of the most volatile releases they’ve come out with yet! Of course, the low RTP of 95% means that this volatility can show quite quickly once you begin playing - and we should warn you that you will see quite a few “dead spins” in the base-game - and even during the main free-spins bonus.
However, despite the high variance math model The Golden Sail is built around, the base-game actually has quite a high hit frequency; wins are formed - on average - 30.5% of the time, although it’s worth pointing out that these wins won’t necessarily be worth more than your stake; a winning spin simply count as a non-losing spin.
You’ll find quite a lot going on in The Golden Sail, and it’s clear that Silverback Gaming have tried their best to create a slot that mimics those we see commonly released from Blueprint; there’s bonuses and features at every corner! Below, we’ll be taking a look at the main features you’ll find within the game.
Big Wheel Bonus
If you look on reels 1, 3 and 5 you’ll notice that there’s a Wheel symbol on each of these reels. Landing a Wheel on each of these three reels will trigger the Big Wheel bonus round, and you’ll then be able to have a spin of a giant wheel; the wheel is capable of awarding a cash win - of up to 50X your stake - entry to the "pick me bonus", along with entry to the main free-spins bonus.
Pick Me Bonus
The "pick me bonus" in The Golden Sail is triggered through the Big Wheel Bonus as shown above. Once triggered, you’ll simply be prompted to pick from three different chests, and your pick can award you up to 5,000X your stake! What we really like about this bonus round, is that the minimum win is a whopping 100X your stake - so it’s a really decent little balance booster if you can land it a few times during a session.
Landing the main free-spins bonus round within The Golden Sail awards you an instant cash prize of 20X your stake, along with 10 free spins. The free-spins’ main mechanic is an increasing multiplier. This begins at 1X, and increases with every winning combination of symbols.
Trail Bonus Feature
The Trail Bonus Feature is another popular bonus round within The Golden Sail. Once activated, you’ll see six coins appear at the bottom of the screen, each of which has a number of between one and six hidden underneath. It’s essentially a “trail bonus” like we’re used to seeing in games like Rainbow Riches - and the further along the trail you get, the more you can win. During the Trail Bonus Feature it’s possible to win as much as 10,000X your stake.
The Golden Sail Review
While The Golden Sail may not be the most groundbreaking slot we’ve ever had the pleasure of reviewing, we think it’s fair to say that Silverback Gaming have done a pretty decent job - especially given their relatively new entrance to the online gambling industry. The game is pretty fun-to-play, and it’s packed with bonuses and features.
We like that these bonuses and features also offer significantly more win-potential than that found within Blueprint Gaming slots - so, with up to 10,000X your bet up for grabs, The Golden Sail is likely to appeal to those in search of more volatile games.
All three features have been pretty well designed and developed in our opinion. While dead spins do seem to be quite common at times, we, again, feel this is made up for by the significant win-potential found within the slot.

The Golden Sail Slot FAQs
What is the theme of The Golden Sail?
The theme of The Golden Sail is meant to be based around ships and high seas - but due to the way that it’s been designed, we’d actually say it resembles more of a Steampunk-esque game more than anything else. However, we should point out that the software provider has done an excellent job with the graphics, and the game looks very clean, the graphics render in full HD, and it’s playable from all devices - including phones and tablets.
What is the RTP of The Golden Sail?
nfortunately - despite looking great, offering some fantastic win-potential and playing smoothly - the potential of The Golden Sail, we feel, to become a true commercial success is hindered due to the game’s low RTP. For some reason, Silverback Gaming have chosen to build the game around a math model that sees the average return to player percentage at just 95% - a figure far lower than we’d expect to see from a developer, especially one partnered with a company like Relax Gaming.
Who are Silverback Gaming?
Silverback Gaming are a relatively new game developer, located in Bulgaria - in South East Europe. The company may not be particularly well-known to players - yet - but thanks to a lucrative partnership with Relax Gaming, all of Silverback’s slots are now pushed out via Relax Gaming’s Silver Bullet platform, ensuring players from all over the world can enjoy the software provider’s titles. They’re an up-and-coming name in the online gambling world, and we expect to see more great games from them released soon!
What’s the maximum win in The Golden Sail?
Determined to attract as many players as possible to play their games, Silverback Gaming have decided to build The Golden Sail around quite a volatile math model - and this means they’ve been able to significantly increase the maximum win of the game. You’ll find yourself able to win as much as 10,000X your stake
