Big Chef and his enormous cloche
Do you know those big silver domes they put over food in restaurants to keep it hot while the waiter rushes to the table? The waiter generally takes it off with a flourish to reveal the dish. Well, that's called a cloche (who said slots didn't teach you anything?). The cloche is the scatter symbol that can appear on reel five during the base game. When it does, you get a free spin!
Now, Microgaming slots don't always allow free spins to be awarded during a free spins game. Good news - in Big Chef, this is allowed. In fact, the game has a more interesting feature than that. Basically, if you get wilds landing during the free spin triggered by the cloche, they're Microgaming's trademark Rising Wilds. And spins stay free until all the rising wilds have got to the top of the reels.
Big Chef's Rising Wilds
When you're in free spins mode, and a wild symbol lands on the screen, it rises to the next row up after each spin. That gives you an upwards path of wilds. After they get to the top row, they spin off the play area.
Note that all lines and bets played are the same as they were in the game that started the feature. However, if both the rising wilds and the base game free spin are activated simultaneously, you get the free spins Rising Wilds feature first, and then that's followed by the base game free spin.
Big Chef's menu is scattered around the restaurant
The blue and gold menu is the scatter symbol, and three, four or five of them in any position trigger 10 free spins. Not only that, this feature also has a simultaneous x2 multiplier. Five menus are worth 300 times your bet, four are worth 60 times, three are worth 15 and two are worth 3. Scatter wins are added to your payline wins.
When Big Chef goes wild….
The Big Chef logo is the wild of the game, and pays 1,000 times your bet for five, 200 times for four and 30 times for three. It substitutes for all symbols except the free spin cloche, and the menu scatter.
Big Chef himself is worth 160 for five, 30 for four and 8 for three of him. The glamorous sous chef is worth 120 for five, 24 for four and 8 for three of her. The waiter is worth 100 for five, 20 for four and 6 for three of him. And the sweet kitchen assistant is worth 80 for five, 15 for four and 6 for three of him.
Those are the main characters in the theme. But of course, the dishes have a starring role too! First up, the crab which is worth 40 for five portions, 10 for four portions and 2 for three portions. Then there's the steak - 30, 10 and 2 respectively. After that comes the chicken - 30, 6 and 1 respectively. Then the soup with the swirl of cream - 20, 6 and 1. And finally the bowl of er - brown stuff - which they're practically giving away at 20, 4 and 0.4.
Big Chef paytable achievements
In Big Chef, you can look at your winnings and stats using the two paytable achievement boxes. One of these shows what you've won in the session, and the other lists your "all-time" biggest wins. To see your top wins, click on the "Win" box, on the dashboard at the bottom of the playing area. You'll see a pop-up display of your most recent wins, and your highest ever win amounts.
You can also see some useful stats about your current game session. Go to the right of the dashboard beneath the play area. There's a small tab shape. Click on it, and you'll see "Options", "Help" and "Stats". You need Stats - select this and you'll see how many spins you've made, how long you've played for, and an average of spins per hour. There's a separate table on the other tab showing your three highest wins for this session. You can use the Reset button to clear the stats, or click on OK to close the Stats box.
The Big Chef achievements feature shows how much you won in your best ever wins, over all the games that you've played. This will continue to be displayed, even after you exit the current game. There are some rules though - wins achieved with free spins or wilds don't count.
Customise Big Chef to suit your playing style
If you love playing Big Chef, and think you'll play it often, it's worth customising the way it works, so that it reflects the way you like playing. Go down to the dashboard, and along to the right. You'll see a small tab shape, - click on this and select "Options".
There are plenty of settings here. For example, the QuickSpin option can be used to speed up play. If you want to up the quality of the graphics, or reduce it, you can use the Graphics Settings options. You can also make multiple changes to the sound. These range from switching off only win or game sounds, to switching off all sounds, or only sounds in the background.
To increase or decrease the volume, use the sound slider bar. In the top right-hand corner of the playing area, you'll see a small speaker icon. Click on this, and the slider bar opens.
Let Big Chef's Autoplay feature do the hard work for you
You can set Big Chef's Autoplay option to spin 10, 25, 50 or 100 times automatically. To do this, just click on the Autoplay button and the spin options will be listed above the button. The "Until Stop" option will keep spins running until you stop them. (When Autoplay is active, the Autoplay button changes to "Stop").
There are other Autoplay options too. You can set the number of spins to be anything from 5 to 500. You can stop the spins when you get a win of a certain size. If you select this option, you'll see the Coins box where you can define what size of win will stop Autoplay. The options range from 1 to 9999.
When you've finished adjusting any custom options, use Save and Close to retain the changes. Click on Start to activate Autoplay with the new settings in place. If you've decided not to bother, just click on "Cancel". When the game is running Autoplay spins, there's a counter on the dashboard which shows the current spin number, and the total spins that you've set to run.
Customising your bets in Big Chef
You can choose to show either just credits, if you're playing in free mode, or both coins and credits, still in free mode but more fun! The Demo Credits box is at the left of the dashboard below the play area. Click on this, and you'll see a box with two tables. One lists the number of coins and credits you currently have. Click on the Options tab to select the option to view your money as coins, credits or both.
If you choose Coins, or Coins & Credits, a new button gets added to the dashboard at the bottom of the screen. This button says Coin Size, and it allows you to set the number of coins per bet, as well as their size. The coin size maximum is 0.50, and the number of coins per bet can be anything from 1 to 10. If you click on Max Bet, the settings will automatically change to the highest coin size and the highest number of coins. The Bet Total amount will reflect this. You can then adjust the Bet Total manually if you wish.
After Big Chef, what's the next course?
If you haven't had enough of fine dining, there are plenty of other restaurant slots to choose from. Try Grillsaison from Rabcat with its soundtrack of squirting ketchup bottles, and homely symbols such as sausages. Or iSoftBet Chef Mario, which has only three reels but allows you to choose how many paylines to play, and is ideal relaxation if you do actually work in a restaurant and have just finished a gruelling shift!
Still with chefs, what about Ninja Chef? It's by iSoftBet again, who are clearly keen on their food. We start with a beautiful roofscape under a full moon but it's soon clear these Ninjas like their nosh. We've got lobster, seafood and steak, all prepared by a black-clad Ninja, with the addition of a chef's hat. The Ninja Chef summons up a bonus round and you need to collect matching food items to get free spins. With multipliers and engaging gameplay, Ninja Chef is definitely worth a look.
Meanwhile, Foxium has set up a lucky bakery. This game has some of the best looking slot food ever. Those pastries dribbled with chocolate sauce - mmmm! In fact, don't play it while you're waiting for your lunch because it will just make you hungrier. It has shuffle and gamble features, free spins and a surprise multiplier wild, so it pretty much takes the biscuit when it comes to gameplay.
There's nothing as good as Mama's Italian cooking, so where are the games featuring her? Aha! Here's one of the best Mama Mia slots. Wow! This one's a bit different - the opening sequence has a huge mouth rearing up at you while it swallows something. No sign of mama in the kitchen, because this is a nicely plump Italian chef with a moustache. Needless to say, he likes to sing opera while he's cooking. Betsoft's take on an Italian restaurant is huge fun to play, with great animations of our chef stirring pots, grating parmesan, chopping veg and so on.
The food looks wonderful, but there's a proper story too. Look at the article in the Restaurant Weekly and you'll see why our chef is making such a fuss about the food he's cooking for tonight's diners. Then try and guess who the secret food critic is.
You can lock wild icons in place during each spin, to give you extra ways to win. In fact, you can add and remove wild icons - a different kind of gameplay that lots of people will be keen to try.
It's visual, and in gameplay terms, a brilliant game. And would you believe it - this chef also has a giant cloche! Perhaps they get given them, along with the checked trousers.
All of these games are available on mobile and tablet, so if you're heading home for a meal - you can play on the way.
