Introduction

Capecod is an Italian game developer founded in 1987. Over the decades it has built up a network of more than 80 gaming operators around the world, which means Capecod online slots can be found very easily. If you are a regular slot player, you have probably played one or more of this developer’s free play slots in the past.

There are scores of pirate-themed games available; for example, Red Tiger has produced a series of three, culminating in the Pirates Plenty Megaways slot. How well Capecod has acquitted itself in this area is what we are here to find out.

Captain Bloodgold has five reels, three rows, and 25 paylines. The coin sizes are 0.1 to 0.10 and the bet per line is 1 to 10; therefore, if you play all 25 lines, the maximum bet is 250. There are nine regular symbols: the pirate captain, pirate ship, Jolly Roger, cannon, muskets, and the four highest playing cards. The wild is a coin and the multiplier is the inevitable parrot.

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

Capecod has gone for a very dramatic visualisation. We are on board the pirate ship on the high seas under a stormy sky. The reels hang from the rigging; behind them, we can see an enemy ship that the pirates are clearly planning to board and loot. Lanterns burn on either side of the reels and a strident orchestral soundtrack plays, complete with a choir in an attempt to turn up the dial on the excitement.

Unfortunately, nothing much changes. A win is met with cannon fire and a brief appearance in close-up of the pirate and his parrot, but then you are back to the reels. As there is no bonus game, we don’t get a change of scene or any extra graphics. The whole slot is a little underwhelming.

Captain Bloodgold bonus features

Wild

The wild symbol substitutes for all symbols except the scatter.

Free spins

Three or more free spin symbols - the treasure chest - landing on the reels will trigger free spins: 3 will award 5 free spins, 4 will award 10, and 5 will award 20. Wins can be more frequent because wilds can appear at random.

2x symbol

The parrot multiplier can land only on the fifth reel. When it does, it multiplies the current winnings by 2x.

Captain Bloodgold review: our verdict

This is a reasonably good try at the crowded pirate corner of the games world. It doesn’t really get anything wrong; equally, there is not a lot to shout about. The RTP is a little low and the gameplay is fairly routine. Even the features are just free spins and a multiplier, which is disappointing.

FAQs

What are the RTP and variance of Captain Bloodgold?

The RTP is 95.38 per cent, which is below average for an online slot. The variance or volatility is medium.

What does RTP mean?

RTP stands for return to player and indicates the percentage a player will receive back on average. It is based on calculations of all win levels. As every RTP is below 100 per cent, the level of player losses will always outweigh the large wins and the average return will always be lower than the total stake.

What does variance mean?

Variance is a concept taken from poker that is applied to slots as a measure of the size and frequency of the payouts. High variance games have bigger but infrequent payouts, while low variance games pay less but more frequently.

Are the spin results genuinely random?

Yes, random number generators are used to spin the reels and there is no human involvement; in fact, the algorithms make human intervention impossible. As such, this is a game of pure chance.
