Introduction

You might not be familiar with our Capecod demo slots. Capecod is not the most well-known developer, even though it has been around a while; however, as you can see from the five reels and 15 paylines of Brain Dead, it knows how to put together a thrilling slot with immersive graphics and a host of exciting features - if you are not too scared of zombies!

Theme, graphics & soundtrack

You know what you are getting with this slot from the moment the loading screen appears and a large 3D zombie opens its mouth and appears ready to climb out of your computer to eat your brains. This is how you make an impression, with the immersive atmosphere continuing once the game is loaded. If you liked the Zombie Circus slot, you will love Brain Dead.

There is something very unsettling about Brain Dead with its two zombies lurching either side of the reels. They appear stationary at first, but then there is a sudden movement designed to make you jump. You wouldn’t think it possible when the graphics are fairly muted, obviously because of the darkness and dirt you expect with zombies. This is a stark contrast to the symbols on the reels, which are vivid with electric colour and 3D detail. There are some more body parts - hands and brains - and there are the guns and grenades you need to fight these monsters. The guitar rocking in the background also keeps things tense.

Brain Dead

Brain Dead RTP and variance

A little disappointingly, the RTP of Brain Dead is 94.97 per cent, which is below the average you would hope for in a modern slot. Of course, the RTP is only a theoretical average and doesn’t mean that your returns can’t deviate - either higher or lower - on individual spins. Capecod hasn’t released an official volatility figure, so you will have to figure out the frequency of wins for yourself when you give the free demo a try.

How to play Brain Dead

If you dare to step out into this apocalypse, here is how you play:

  1. For a proper look at the paytable, locate the tiny trophy symbol at the very bottom on the left. This will show you every possible symbol and its respective values.
  2. You can also take a more in-depth look at the game rules, explaining every button and feature, by clicking the question mark next to the paytable symbol. This will open the help page.
  3. Move over to the right-hand corner where there are some more buttons. First is the settings gear, which will give you toggles to switch the intro screen, fast spin mode and winning line details on and off.
  4. This corner is also where you will find the volume button. This will give you options for music volume, SFX volume and enable sound. Next to the volume button and last in this set is the control for full-screen mode.
  5. Now we move up to the buttons and displays just under the reels. There are two adjustors, one on the left and one on the right, both with plus and minus signs to change them. The first is coins x line and the second is coin value, both of which can affect your bet.
  6. You will also see displays for the number of paylines, your total bet and total credits. Further down are the credits, bet and win. All these figures are useful if you are doing what you should and playing with a budget that you stick to.
  7. An alternate way to adjust your bet, if you know you want the extra risk, is to click ‘max bet’ near the centre of the screen.
  8. The centre is also where you make your choice between spinning once if you click the play symbol or up to 500 times in autoplay. You can also include win and loss limits with the latter.

Bet & win sizes

The coins x line goes from 1 to 10 and the coin value from 0.01 to 0.15, making a total bet range of 15 to 150.

Three, four or five matches on a payline pay as follows for each symbol:

  • Jack, queen = 5, 25, 150
  • King = 5, 30, 175
  • Ace = 10, 30, 200
  • Hand = 15, 50, 250
  • Gun = 20, 75, 350
  • Grenade = 50, 150, 500
  • Brain = 50, 200, 1,000
  • Man, wild = 75, 300, 1,500

There is also a 2x symbol that can appear on the rightmost reel, which means all your wins are multiplied by two.

Brain Dead bonus features

Free spins

Find the handily-labelled free spins symbol three times anywhere on the reels and you will trigger the free spins round. Every non-scatter winning combination in this round will disappear and its symbols replaced, meaning extra chances to fill a payline without using more free spins.

Dead bonus game

This round is triggered by finding three scatter symbols. You then have a chance to take five shots at the attacking zombies. Hit them and you will be awarded a random prize.

Brain Dead review

This slot is all about the atmosphere, as you would expect in a horror themed slot. Just looking at it will send chills up your spine, especially with the vivid graphics. The smooth gameplay and easy to control settings help, as does the unusual but very welcome multiplier symbol. The two bonus rounds are the icing on an unsettling brain cake.
