The ninja emerged in feudal Japan as a mercenary who took part in a range of covert activities, including sabotage, guerilla warfare and assassination.
Their ways were considered to be lacking in honour and below the methods of the samurai, who had strict rules to oversee their caste and style of fighting. It is thought the ninja is a phenomenon of the 15th century, although some records indicate they were spying and battling in the 12th.
When Japan was united in the 17th century, the ninja faded into obscurity in the real world and entered the stuff of legend and folklore Ninja used short swords and daggers to carry out their violent work.
One of their favourite tools was the katana, or traditional Japanese sword, also used by the samurai. Curved, with a single edge, the katana had a long grip for two hands. The ninja arsenal also featured a number of items that could be thrown, including spikes, darts and star-shaped discs known as shuriken.
Ninja also used bows and a weapon that was a combination of a sickle and a chain. A weight on the chain could bring down an opponent, with the ninja using the sickle to finish off the victim.
