Peking Behind the Scenes
First of all, let’s just say it looks wonderful. On a stylised sea, like something from an ancient Chinese painting, we see a floating Chinese theatre! Chinese lanterns sway gently in the breeze, and colourful fans and masks invite us to try our luck. And with five reels, three rows and 25 paylines, along with multipliers, wilds and scatters, we could be in with a chance.
It all looks very calm. But be warned. This is a high-volatility slot, so it may look as pretty as a picture, but hang onto your hat because this is one exciting ride to the Orient! The lovely lady actress hiding modestly behind her fluttering pink fan may be a bit wilder than she seems!
RTP
High-volatility games like Peking Luck don’t pay out quite as often as others - but when they do, they pay much higher amounts. Peking Luck has a Return to Player (RTP) of 96.5%. But you’d have to play for a long time to hit exactly that number. You may get a great big payout long before then! Just be aware that you could wait a while for the big one too.
The symbols and icons have been carefully chosen to give a real flavour of the Peking opera, the great traditional art form of Chinese theatre. The cymbals and drums add to the atonal music in the theatre. Pragmatic Play had adapted this to produce a lovely inspiring soundtrack with female voices singing and traditional instruments playing. But in case you don't want the ambient sound, the settings allow you to switch between the soundtrack or sound effects or neither. You can also adjust the volume.
Setting Up and Changing Your Wager
On either side of the big spin button are a plus and a minus symbol. Use these to set the size and type of your bet and to adjust it later if you want to make changes.
When you click on the plus symbol, it turns green, and you see a window showing you how many lines you’re betting on, the number of coins per line and the value of each coin. You can adjust the coins per line and their value using the plus and minus keys next to each. A handy counter at the bottom of the window shows you the size of your total bet in both money and coins.
Peking Luck Symbols
The painted man with his amazing headdress pays from 750 for five appearances down to two for just two of him. Five dragons pay 500, and that goes down to just two for two dragons. The ornate traditional drum, with its ribbons, pays 400 for five drums, 80 for four drums and 20 for three drums. The lovely pink fan pays 300, 75 and 15 for five fans, four fans and three fans respectively. And the cymbals pay 250, 60 and 15 for five cymbals, four cymbals and three cymbals respectively.
There are the usual playing cards, although these are nicely drawn in a selection of jewel-like colours. Five, four and three Aces pay 200, 50 and 10. Five, four and three Kings pay 150, 40 and 10. Five, four and three Queens pay 125, 30 and 5. Five, four and three 10s pay 100, 25 and 5. And finally, you get paid for five, four, three and two nines and you’ll win 100, 25, 5 and 2.
The Actress Is Wild!
The beautiful actress with the fan and the flower in her hair is the Wild - don’t say you weren’t warned! Now the winnings get serious. Five appearances by this theatrical dame and you get 10,000 coins. Four appearances will net you 4,000, three appearances 500 and two appearances 20.
She substitutes for all other symbols except the Free Spins icon. Every reel has a Wild symbol, and all wins that contain at least one Wild used as a substitute are doubled. The wild symbol is stacked - and by the way, a full screen of these would pay you 10,000 times your wager.
Free Spins Feature
Not only can the Wild double up your wins, but if you get three or more scatters anywhere on screen, you’ll activate the Free Spins feature. There are special reels in play during the free spins, and the scatter symbol is contained on each reel. There’s more to this than just a simple free spin game, though. This is where you need to be to win that maximum payout!
Before the free spins start, you’ll see six colourful fans, and you have to choose one. When you’ve chosen, the audience claps and you see how many free spins were hidden underneath the fan you chose - you also see all the free spins that you could have one with the other fans - the range is from five to fifty.
Next, you see six masks and, again, you choose one, with the totals hidden by each mask shown once you’ve chosen one. The multipliers range from two to 18. This choice gives you the multiplier for the feature. The curtains swish aside, and off you go. Every free spin that wins is multiplied by the random multiplier.
It’s possible to get a multiplier of 180,000. Here’s how. You’d have to get 18 as your multiplier in the mask choice. Then you’d need a screen full of wilds, which works out to 10,000 times your bet. Then multiply that by 18. Good luck!
You’re going to love the different screens you get when you win - “Nice” in big gold letters or “Mega”, depending on how big the win is - and a shower of gold coins cascading downwards.
It doesn’t stop there, because this is the Peking Theatre and when it comes to free spins, they’re giving you an encore! All line wins that contain a Wild substituting for another symbol in order to achieve a payline are multiplied by two during the Free Spins feature.
Another encore? Oh, go on then. Three or more scatters appearing anywhere on screen during the free spins feature will earn you another ten free spins using the current multiplier - with no limits on the number of free spins you earn. So that’s a really great deal on the spins.
One of the nice things about this slot is that when you win you see a shorthand description of the win line, and it tells you how much you’ve won and which payline was used - very clear.
