Step into the universe
You don’t need to be an expert on astronomy to enjoy the well-designed visuals featured in this game, but you may want some explanations of the more unusual symbols on the reels. The blue and green planet Earth is easy to pick out, as are red-hued Venus, Saturn with its spectacular rings, the imposingly large Jupiter and the fiery figure of Mars. The final regular icon is a swirling blue galaxy, which is also the Wild.
Rather than the usual supporting images of ace, king, queen and jack from a pack of cards, Merkur's Planets opts for a more-fitting set of symbols. Choosing to use images that are often only easily recognised by academics and serious astrology and astronomy enthusiasts is a bit of a gamble, but the game maker’s choice does fit in well with the theme, and so the risk certainly pays off. Neptune is represented by the pale blue trident symbol, the gold E lookalike is for Pluto, the pink circle with an arrow emerging from the top is used for Uranus, and the light green circle with the downward arrow represents Mercury.
Banking the cash
Acting as a Wild, the blue galaxy symbol substitutes for all other symbols, and can help to boost your winnings considerably. The blue galaxy is also the most generous of all the symbols featured, with five across the reels paying 80 coins. Second in the league is Earth, which offers 10 as a reward for a full house. The four other planets and the other unusual symbols only pay 3–4 for the same. It’s also worth noting that although the winnings for 2 or 3 matches are fairly low across the board they can be boosted with higher stakes or by adding extra paylines.
There are two ways to boost your winnings in Planets. One is with the Wild icon. The other is triggered by any win, no matter how small, when players can choose between gambling all or half of the win on a 50-50 ‘guess the next playing card colour’ game, where success means doubling the stake, and a prize ladder option that could lead players either upwards to a bonus cash reward or down onto the loss rungs.
Planets is a fascinating free slots game with attractive features and it has been designed to provide the same high level of play to mobile and tablet users as it does to those playing on a larger screen.
