Introduction

Rich Ox is an extremely straightforward game from the Asian start-up Dragoon Soft. The company spent a year in the planning stage before launching in 2018. Although they started by focusing on their home market of China and the wider Asian continent, their ambition is to be a global supplier of casino games. Rich Ox is a very modest entry compared to some other Dragoonsoft online slots and although it borrows from the same very fertile area of Chinese mythology and folklore as a game like Genesis Gaming’s Year of the Ox slot, Dragoon Soft have opted for the slimmest of slimmed down approaches. As free play slots go it is pretty audacious in its simplicity. Whether that is a good or bad thing is debatable.

Rich Ox has a 3 reel grid with 3 columns. This is the first sign that the makers have chosen to follow the maxim ‘less is more’. It has just 1 pay line. The minimum bet size is 0.1 and the maximum is 200. There are just four symbols, which makes the paytable small, which is how the makers have been able to keep it on display to the left of the screen throughout play.The symbols are a gold ox, a silver ox, a bronze ox and a grey ox representing any symbol. 

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

Rich Ox is, like everything we’ve seen from Dragoon Soft so far, very nicely realised. The bright yellow background of mountains and clouds at sunrise complements the deep red and gold of the grid where the gleaming metal ox figurines spin. When you land a modest win the oxen wriggle with pleasure, and when you land a big win the screen erupts in a cascade of gold coins. That’s pretty much all there is to see. The soundtrack is a fairly good approximation of Chinese traditional music and the sound effects are adequate. It would be good to have some variety in the visuals but that clearly isn’t part of the concept.

At the time of writing there is no reliable source of information on the game’s RTP or its variance. RTP in Dragoon Soft games is usually at least average (96 per cent) or above although it’s impossible to say whether this game follows that pattern.

How to play Rich Ox

1. Click the Play button to start playing using the current total bet value. You can also set the Space Bar to start by selecting this in the settings menu
2. Press the Stop button which replaces the Play button to stop the reels mid-spin.
3. Select the Coins symbol to select a bet level from 0.1 to 200, or use the + and - buttons to adjust it.
4. The Auto spin function allows you to select spins from 100 to infinity. 
5. Click the main menu at the bottom left then click the settings cog to bring up various visual and speed of play settings. Here you can also set the autoplay game game to stop on a win at a specified minimum level and also set maximum cash increase levels and cash loss levels.
6. The balance is displayed at the bottom left of the screen.
7. Click the lightning bolt for turbo spin.
8. On most spins only 1 or 2 symbols will land on the pay line. Only when three land together is there a win.

Rich Ox review: our verdict

There isn’t a great deal to say about Rich Ox. If you’re a fan of traditional games and a pared down kind of slot appeals to you then this may satisfy you. The pay-outs are low and the game play couldn’t be simpler, but sometimes that may be the kind of alternative you’re looking for after reel upon reel of heavily themed and complex game play. It looks very smart but it’s unlikely to hold the attention for very long.
