Introduction

Based in Stockholm, Sweden, Slot Mill is run by a team of experts and enthusiasts who are committed to adding real value to the casino games that are available. You will find Slot Mill free slots with increasing frequency as you visit online casinos and although Slot Mill doesn’t always include everything you have come to expect, such as a slot with bonus round, its work is always worth a look.

In Star Spell, the designers have dressed up a fairly traditional slot format within an attractive theme, which is a tactic we have seen in the creation of many other slots. NetEnt’s Starburst slot is just one example. There is nothing wrong with this, as long as you don’t come to it expecting something entirely original.

Star Spell has a conventional five-reel, three-column grid with ten paylines. The minimum bet is 0.10 and the maximum is 100. There are seven regular symbols: book of spells, pentagram, purple flask, red flask, yellow flask, green flask and blue flask.

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

There is a quaintly old-fashioned look to Star Spell. The lavishly illustrated background of the twin castles against a sky brimming with stars is given an atmospheric purple wash, with the lights in the tiny castle windows hinting at all kinds of mysterious arcane activities.

The reels are attractively illustrated, and the wins are sharply animated. It does seem a shame that all the regular symbols are inanimate objects, as this makes it a slightly impersonal, characterless affair until the flamboyantly dressed witch appears as the wild. She certainly isn’t an old crone in a black hooded cloak; instead, she wears a shimmering blue outfit and an extraordinarily ornate hat. It is a shame there isn’t more in the way of human participation.

Full of vague echoes and approximations of Hogwarts music, the soundtrack is unremarkable but adequately functional.

Star Spell bonus features

Expanding sticky wilds

These are respin win multipliers. The wizard is the wild symbol and appears on reels two, three and four, where it expands and substitutes for all symbols. Once expanded, the wild remains in place and triggers a free respin. If an additional wild appears during the respin, one more respin is awarded and the expanded wilds remain in place. A win multiplier is applied to winnings with two and three wilds: two wilds award a 2x win multiplier and three wilds award a 3x win multiplier.

Star Spell review: our verdict

The RTP is slightly above average and the low variance means you can expect fairly regular payouts of modest size; however, the gameplay is not very inspiring and, on the whole, Star Spell rather underdelivers. The burst feature does not add much to the functionality and there is a distinct lack of meaningful features. It is not clear who this would appeal to. The visuals are quite old-fashioned and the extras are very meagre. It feels as if an opportunity has been missed.

FAQs

Are the results of the spins genuinely random?

Yes, random number generators are used to spin the reels. There is no requirement for any human involvement and you can be assured that the algorithms make human intervention impossible.

What is the RTP and variance of Star Spell?

The game’s RTP is 96.17 per cent. The variance or volatility is low.

What does RTP mean?

RTP stands for return to player. The figure for each game indicates the average percentage a player can reasonably expect to receive back; however, this is based on all win levels, which means the level of player losses will outweigh the large wins in the long run. The average player’s return will always be lower than the total amount wagered.

What does variance mean?

Variance or volatility is a term borrowed from poker and applied to slots as an indication of the frequency and size of the payouts. High variance games award large payouts but deliver them only rarely, while low variance games award small wins more frequently.
