Theme, graphics and soundtrack

Asgard Warriors blends figures and objects from Norse mythology with a more earthbound setting. The grid is a simple wooden board with a lavishly illustrated backdrop of mountains, lush forests, looming storm clouds and green hills surrounding the choppy waters of a fjord.

Frankly, the visualisation is a little tame. The artwork is curiously old-fashioned, not quite naturalistic but not quite stylised either. 1x2 also seem to have missed an opportunity by not putting any animation into the background - at least the waters might have been given some movement.

The illustrations of the symbols are similarly non-committal. There are powerful gods and goddesses of war, but they look a bit underwhelming. The animation of the reels is fairly mild as well - little bursts of framing fire but not much else. The game also does without a soundtrack, which is not always a bad thing since getting really good original music commissioned can be expensive, but Asgard Warriors really feels as if it needs something else to boost the excitement level. All we have is the sound effects, cowbells as the reels spin, thumps as the reels land, the sound of a sword being drawn on a winning combination. It doesn’t look or sound very contemporary.

How to play Asgard Warriors

1. Click the Spin button or press the space bar to start playing using the current total bet value. Click again to stop the reels.

Asgard Warriors review: our verdict

The game strikes us as something of a curate’s egg - good in parts. It has a decent set of game features in the base game and the free spins round but the visuals really do let it down. What’s particularly disappointing is the RTP which is much lower than we’d normally expect to see.
