First impressions of Emperor of the Sea
As you’d expect from one of the leading online slots game developers, the game loads very quickly, so you won’t have to spend ages watching your screen and waiting for the game to download. Within just a few seconds the game is ready to play, and it looks absolutely stunning, with glorious attention to detail.
Microgaming employs a raft of talented developers, designers and graphic artists, all of whom work tirelessly to produce games with that extra ‘Wow’ factor. And although it would be easy to skimp on the little details, this simply isn’t an option for Microgaming, who have really pushed the boat out to deliver superior graphics and seamless gameplay, no matter what device you access the game with.
The game’s title screen features the Green Dragon, said to be one of the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas. According to Chinese mythology, the dragon is a symbol of great wealth, prosperity and good fortune, making it an ideal icon for any online slots game.
Once the game has finished loading, you’ll be taken to the main playing area. This is beautifully rendered in shades of blue, reminiscent of the iconic blue willow patterned crockery known throughout the world. Here it is used to great effect to represent the sky, dotted with stylised clouds and rays of sunlight, while waves ripple the ocean’s surface.
The ancient Chinese were a seafaring nation, and their ships sailed to foreign shores, packed with Oriental artefacts and treasures, which were used for bartering, so the game uses a variety of symbols across the reels in keeping with the theme. You’ll find a traditional Chinese sailing ship, a tortoise, some beautiful Koi carp and delicate jade vases featured on the reels. The most important symbols are the highly soughtafter Chinese golden ingots, also known as Sycees or YuanBao, which are an important representation of great fortune and good luck, making them ideal for games of this type.
Most online slots games feature playing card symbols, and Emperor of the Sea is no exception. You’ll find all the major court cards represented on the reels, along with the 9 and 10, all beautifully crafted in gorgeous colours.
The soundtrack of an online slots game can make or break it, which is perhaps why most games feature an off switch for the music, so that players can turn it off when it becomes too distracting or irritating. But for Emperor of the Sea Microgaming has developed a pleasant soundtrack that captures the spirit of the Orient, whilst still giving a nod to Western musical influences. We can’t guarantee that you’d want to listen to it all day, but it’s certainly not intrusive or annoying.
Play Emperor of the Sea for free
Most online slots games follow the same basic layout for controls, but Emperor of the Sea takes a little more time to get to grips with, since the majority of the game’s controls aren’t instantly accessible. For this reason, we highly recommend that players should take as much time as they need to get to grips with the controls, and experiment with different betting strategies to see how that affects the game’s outcome.
If you’ve played plenty of online slots games in the past, then it won’t take too long to gain an understanding of the controls of Emperor of the Sea, but if you’re a complete newcomer to the genre then you might want to take your time over this aspect of gaming, particularly if you plan on wagering real money at one of our partner sites once you’ve got the hang of the controls.
You can play the game as often as you like here on our site without risking any of your own hard-earned cash in the process. Alter the betting amount to see whether bidding high or low suits you best, and calculate how well you are doing by keeping an eye on your virtual balance. Remember, you don’t have to sign up or deposit any funds to play games here on our site, so any wins - or losses - are purely theoretical.
How to play Emperor of the Sea
The most important aspect of every online slots game is the Spin button, which sets the reels in motion. Usually it’s to be found along the bottom part of the playing area, along with all the other controls of the game, but here Microgaming has decided to opt for something a little different, so the Spin button has been placed directly to the right-hand side of the reels.
The only other obvious control is situated opposite the Spin button to the left-hand side of the reels. A green lozenge alters to display your current bet, and you can access this by clicking or tapping on the icon. A rotating dial allows you to pick your wager from a selection.
But for the best results, you need to tailor the betting to your precise requirements. To do this, click or tap on the hamburger menu of three horizontal lines towards the top left-hand side of the playing area. This will open a menu of options.
Select the Settings tab to access the wagering aspect of the game. Here you can decide on the value of coin that you would like to play with - which can vary between 1p up to a maximum of 5p. Now you have the option of choosing how many coins you wish to include for each active payline. Which can be anything between one and ten. Now you need to decide how many paylines to include for each spin of the reels. Your options are to include 38, 68 or 88 paylines, which is the maximum number, and also an extremely auspicious number according to Chinese numerology. Once you return to the game area, you’ll see that the window to the left of the reels displays your total bet for the next spin. If you’re not happy, you can return to the menu screens to adapt your wager until you’re completely satisfied.
The hamburger menu also gives you access to the game’s paytable, so you can see how many of each symbol are needed for a cash prize. For most symbols, you need to attain three or more matching symbols on an active payline to qualify for a win, but some symbols, including the wild, offer a payout for achieving just two matching symbols on a payline, increasing your chances of a cash prize.
Emperor of the Sea wilds and scatters
All keen online slots enthusiasts understand the importance of wilds and scatters. They bring extra chances of winning along with some bonus features, adding to the fun and enjoyment that a game provides.
For Emperor of the Sea, the game’s wild is the logo, which alters to show the word Wild when it appears on a winning line. Wilds can substitute for all other symbols on the reels apart from scatters, and in Emperor of the Sea, wilds can appear stacked, giving you even more chances of amassing an impressive virtual prize pot.
The scatter is represented by the Chinese golden ingot, and when three or more appear on the reels, this is the trigger that introduces the game’s bonus Free Spins round. But the scatter also offers cash rewards too, with three scatters awarding you 2x your total wager. Attain five scatters across the reels and you’ll benefit from an extremely tempting 100x your wager, as well as receiving your free spins.
Emperor of the Sea Free Spins Bonus
Three or more scatters trigger the game’s Free Spin Bonus round, during which you’re taken to a new screen. Here the background of the reels turns black, rather than the white that is used throughout the rest of the game, and some extra features also come into play.
If you achieve a winning line during the Free Spins Bonus round, all symbols contributing to the win are removed from the reels. New symbols now drop down into the empty spaces, in a feature that Microgaming refer to as Rolling Reels. If new symbols that have dropped down onto the reels contribute towards another winning line, you will be awarded that amount and the winning symbols will once again disappear. This gives the player multiple chances of achieving wins with just one spin of the reels.
Another feature of the Free Spins Bonus round is Growing Wilds. This allows an extra wild to be added to a stack of wilds with each spin of the reels, with the potential to achieve up to 15 stacked wilds in total. And since wilds can substitute for all other symbols on the reels, other than the scatter, this makes it much more likely that the player can add to their prize pot in the process.
Emperor of the Sea RTP and volatility
Emperor of the Sea has a stated RTP of 96.28%, which is about average for a game of this type. Also known as Return to Player, this percentage refers to the total amount that players spend on a slots game that is returned to players over an extended period of time. Of course, some players will receive a much higher return than this, whilst others will fail to recover any of the money they spend, but the house advantage will always remain at just under 4%.
The game is also medium to high volatility, which makes it more suitable for high rollers than casual players. You can expect to scoop big wins intermittently, rather than experience plenty of smaller wins. This is why playing in Free Play mode is such a good option, as it allows you to create a wagering strategy that works for you.
