Our first impressions of Hockey Hero

As slots fans first and foremost, we have to admit to not being the sportiest of types, but that doesn’t stop us from recognising a truly great sports-themed game when we see one. We have to say that we were blown away by the talent on show in Hockey Hero, which is full to bursting with great graphics, cool sounds and some fast and furious reel-spinning action.

The splash screen gives a hint of what’s to come, featuring all-American reds, whites and blues with a speeding hockey puck giving players a clue as to the type of hockey on offer. From here, we found ourselves transported to an ice hockey arena, filled with row upon row of cheering fans. But of course, it’s the ice rink itself where the action takes place, so this is where you’ll find the reels.

For the symbols on the reels, Push Gaming has included a number of playing card symbols, represented by the letters A, K, Q and J. In keeping with the ice hockey theme, each of these symbols has been depicted in bright colours, as though they’d been printed onto white card and laid just below the surface of the ice. You can just make out cracks and marks from the players’ ice skates across them, which is a nice touch that we appreciated.

The other symbols on the reels are much more closely associated with the game’s overall theme, featuring an ice hockey puck, a pair of ice skates and a player’s helmet - an absolutely essential piece of kit in a game that thrives on forceful player encounters. This is a genuine contact sport, after all!

But it’s the three hockey players, each decked out in his own colours of either red, blue or green, that dominate the reels, for more reasons than one. Each character is carefully drawn to give players some indication of their characters.
