Introduction

The safari is a popular setting for slots but hasn’t yet become overused, so Lightning Box made a good choice with Kalahari Safari. Little details - such as having four rows for the five reels instead of three - add depth, as do the impressive 1,024 ways to win. There is also the free spins round triggered by the scatter, which has some big payout options, and a wild symbol that can become stacked during the free spins.

There are plenty of Lightning Box free demo slots available here at Slots Temple, but Kalahari Safari has the right combination of style and features to make it distinct. Try it out for yourself - even if you prefer playing slots for real money, it is always a good idea to practise for free first. There is no financial risk, but you can still enjoy the fun.

Theme, graphics & soundtrack

You hear the word ‘safari’ and think of wild animals, specifically the iconic creatures of Africa. The word means ‘journey’ in the Swahili language and reflects the long distances people are willing to travel to see elephants and lions and other magnificent beasts. If you can’t quite make the journey in person, a trip to these reels will give you a glimpse of the wonder of a safari. The Kalahari is the desert covering most of Botswana and parts of South Africa and Namibia. You may have visited there in other African themed slots, of which there are plenty of fun options.

This particular slot isn’t really desert-based, with sweeping plains of grass cut by a vast river - probably the Okavango - in the loading screen and a background straight out of The Lion King. What isn’t lacking is the animals, with giraffes and zebras behind the reels and lions, elephants and crocodiles amongst the symbols. Each is drawn in vivid 3D detail that makes it seem almost as though they will charge out of the screen. On a winning spin, you can see birds fly, lions roar or even elephants stampeding depending on the size of your victory, whilst the soundtrack intensifies when bonus features are triggered.

Kalahari Safari

Kalahari Safari RTP and variance

This slot has the slightly low RTP of 95.1 per cent. You may see small variations in some casinos - as always, the RTP is a guideline figure and there is room for statistical deviation up or down. The medium volatility means there is a good balance of risk and reward that should appeal to most types of player.

How to play Kalahari Safari

Are you ready to journey into the Kalahari?

1. If you look under the reels and start on the left, the first button you see will be the volume control.

2. Next to this is the menu button, which you can use to access the paytable and game rules.

3. This is followed by displays for your current balance, your total bet and your most recent win, which are all useful figures to know.

4. There is a button depicting a stack of coins that will open your options for the bet level.

5. You can then choose between the autoplay button and the manual spin button, depending on whether you would rather set the reels spinning automatically or want to control each turn yourself.

6. If you choose autoplay, you can pick a number of spins and a single win limit or loss limit as your stopping point. Without win and loss limits, autoplay won’t work.

Bet & win sizes

Kalahari Safari has a bet range of between 0.4 and 50.00, which is a decent range.

In ascending order, the symbols are ranked on the paytable as follows:

Kalahari Safari bonus features & free spins

- Free spins

The elephant is the biggest animal on the savannah and your biggest chance of winning. Three or more elephant scatters will trigger free spins. To be more precise:

Three scatters = eight free spins and 2x your bet

Four scatters = 15 free spins and 10x your bet

Five scatters = 20 free spins and 20x your bet

During the free spins round, you could see stacked wilds that fill an entire reel and again increase your winning chances. Free spins can also be retriggered for between five and 20 free spins depending on the number of scatters you find.

Kalahari Safari review: our verdict

This slot looks good but admittedly doesn’t have the greatest depth in terms of format or features. The free spins round is fun, especially with the retriggers and variable number of spins, and there is the exciting addition of stacked wilds. Other than this, the base game is basic. If you like your African animals and scenery, you will probably like this slot; however, those who prefer more complex games with higher winning potential may prefer something like the famous Mega Moolah slot from Microgaming with its large progressive jackpots.
