Introduction

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

The blurred image of the ship’s deck in the introduction clears and we find ourselves standing at the helm on the bridge heading out across open water. The sea undulates, occasionally splashing the hull, the clouds above race and converge on the horizon as the ship glides past treacherous rocks to the left and right. There is no land in sight so any treasures to be won must already be on board. The symbols on the reels are generally well animated and the game comes alive for the free spins round when the skull-headed pirate ghost takes over the helm and drives the ship through a sudden storm.

The sound effects - particularly the parrot - are good, though the crowd cheering the big win does make you wonder how many people are on board. Perhaps a ‘Hooray and up she rises’ would be more suitable.

As we write this review it is not possible to find information on the game’s RTP or its variance. Although the RTP of Dragoon Soft games tends to be around the average (96 per cent), this is only a rough guide. 

How to play Pirate King

1. Click the Spin button to start playing the reels using the current total bet value. The Spin button turns into a Stop button once the reels are spinning. Click this to stop the reels mid-spin.
2. Select the main menu and settings to activate the space bar as an alternative to the spin button.
3. Select the Coins symbol. This allows you to select a bet level from 0.01 to 50 which will be multiplied by the 10 lines. Alternatively use the + and - buttons to adjust the bet level.
4. The Auto spin function allows you to select spins from a choice of 100, 200, 500 or infinite. 
5. Click the main menu on the bottom left and click the settings cog to call up a selection of visual and speed settings. Here you can set the autoplay game to stop on a win at a specified minimum level and also set maximum balance increase levels and balance decrease levels.
6. The running balance is displayed at the bottom left of the screen.

Wild

The wild substitutes for all symbols. It appears only on reels 2, 3 and 4. If 1 wild lands anywhere on the reels it will trigger 1 free game.

Free Game

Once a wild appears 1 free game is activated. In the free game reels 1 and 5 are changed to the extended fix reel. The middle positions of reels 2, 3 and 4 will appear as Hot Spots. In the free game, if wild symbols appear on the reel they become fixed on the reel until the end of the free game. During the free game, if 1 wild symbol lands anywhere on reels 2, 3 and 4 the player wins 1 extra free game. If 3 wild symbols appear on the Hot Spot position then the player wins a 1,000x reward multiplier and the free game concludes.

Pirate King review: our verdict

The extra features are extremely limited and the bonus game is really just a hyped-up free spins round. Most of the pay-outs are modest and it is only if you land the Hot Spot win with a high bet that you really rake in the rewards. Diverting but not essential.
