About Space Wars
As an online slots game designed and developed by NetEnt, players can be sure that they’re in for a treat from the moment that the introduction screen begins playing. A weird synthesised tune, reminiscent of Doctor Who, Star Wars and Lost in Space, leaves you in no doubt that you’ve entered the furthest reaches of the universe, as peculiar-looking aliens set the tone for what’s to come.
The game itself takes place against a backdrop of planets, stars, dust clouds and meteors, here rendered in attractive shades of mauve, purple and violet. The reels are transparent, allowing the background to take centre stage, and there’s no definition to the reels themselves, creating a cool and uncluttered look. This lets the cute three-dimensional aliens stand out in all their glory, and we guarantee that you’ll fall in love with these cute characters.
To the right-hand side of the reels is a mysterious jar, in which winning symbols can be cloned. Aside from providing extra chances of winning, this also allows the game’s graphics team to display their talents, as varying numbers of aliens are stuffed into its confines, with amusing results.
The top-paying symbol is a red crystal, but all of the other symbols are aliens - you won’t find any of those ubiquitous poker cards or fruit symbols blurring the theme with this game. Instead, there’s an orange alien with octopus tentacles, wearing a helmet, a yellow frog-like creature with large, blue eyes, a cheerful three-eyed green alien with missing teeth, a blue creature with massive pink lips and a purple one-eyed monster with crab claws for hands. There’s also a selection of lesser-paying aliens, who appear to be baby versions of the main creatures, featuring large round bodies and tiny arms and legs - or tentacles as the case might be.
NetEnt has garnered a great reputation for building high-quality slots games packed with features that keep players coming back for more, and Space Wars certainly doesn’t disappoint. No attention to detail has been spared, from the soundtrack to the graphics, making this a game that you’ll want to linger over. And unlike some major online slots developers, NetEnt Free Slots give you the chance to try out all their games without having to wager any of your hard-earned money in the process, giving you ample opportunities to get to grips with the gameplay first. That way, you can be sure that you know exactly what to expect from the game before going on to bet any cold, hard cash on the game.
How to play Space Wars
This is a fairly standard five-reel, four-row online video slots game, featuring 40 fixed paylines. This means that you need to pay attention when placing your bet, as you won’t be able to reduce your total wager by selecting fewer paylines.
You can, however, select the level you play it, which gives you a good degree of flexibility when deciding the sum that you wish to bet for each spin. Of course, the real beauty of playing Space Wars for free at Slots Temple is the ability to calculate your betting strategy before heading to one of our partner sites to wager real money on the game.
So, to begin the game, you need to start by selecting the value of the coin you wish to play with. This harks back to the days when slot machines could only be found in bricks and mortar casinos, but the term lingers on. You can select a variety of options, ranging from one penny up to a maximum of 50 pence. You’ll find the coin display window immediately to the right-hand side of the central Spin button, and you can alter the amount shown by clicking or tapping on the buttons to either side of the window.
Next, rather than selecting the number of paylines you would like to play, you need to decide on the level of play. You’ll find the level window immediately to the left-hand side of the Spin button, and once again you can scroll through the levels, from 1 - 10, by clicking or tapping to the buttons on either side of the window. The Bet window to the left shows you how much your coin bet is multiplied by, for ease of identification. Now hit or tap on the Spin button, and see where the reels take you.
If all of this tapping and clicking seems too much like hard work, you can go for broke and hit the Bet Max button to the right of the Spin button. This will keep your current coin value, and apply it to level 10 of the betting structure, multiplying your coin bet by 400x. Selecting Bet Max will also set the reels spinning too, so only one tap or click is required.
Alternatively, you can opt to use the handy Autospin feature, by using the tab to the left of the Spin button. This will present you with a range of options for automatic spins, leaving you free to watch the action unfold across the reels. To alter the parameters of the Autospin function, select the Advanced tab, which allows you to determine what results can end the feature, such as win amounts or losses, for example. If you change your mind at any time during Autospin, you can hit the Stop button to cancel the feature and restore the game to manual control.
At the very bottom of the playing console, you’ll find a number of icons that allow you to adapt the game to your particular tastes. Hitting the spanner icon brings up a range of settings that you can adjust according to your preference, such as opting for quick spin, or allowing a spin through a tap of the spacebar, if you’re playing on a laptop or desktop computer. You can toggle the sound on and off, and access the Help screens too. A window to the right of the icons displays your available coins, the amount of your current bet, and any wins that accrue during gameplay.
There’s also a Paytable button which is located just beneath the first reel. Tapping or clicking on this will bring up the paytable for easy reference, so that you can find out how much the various combinations of each symbol are worth when they appear in a winning payline. Match three or more symbols on a payline, starting from the leftmost reel, and you can expect to receive a payout, followed by an automatic free spin, thereby increasing your chances to achieve another win.
Space Wars bonus features
NetEnt specialises in creating games with lots of added features that contribute extra fun to the gameplay, not to mention the chance to increase your winnings, sometimes quite spectacularly. Space Wars is no exception, so while playing the game, you can expect to encounter Wilds, re-spins and stacked symbols.
The game’s Wild is represented by the word WILD, and although it can only appear on the second and fourth reels, it makes an appearance frequently enough to make it a worthwhile and valuable addition to the game. The Wild can substitute for any other symbol, giving you the potential to achieve a win, even when you don’t have enough matching symbols.
Stacked symbols also shift the game’s odds in the player’s favour. Any of the symbols on the reels, including the Wild, can appear stacked on a reel at any time, whether during normal gameplay or during a free spins round. By stacking up into blocks, this means that you can achieve even more winning lines, with players often attaining several winning lines with one spin - and with an automatic free spin, this dramatically increases your chances of achieving even more wins from one single spin.
But the real attraction of Space Wars comes into play when the Cloning Pod, to the right of the reels, is activated. When you manage to score a winning line, the winning symbols are teleported across to the Cloning Pod, where they are squashed into place with amusing results. Then they are cloned and sent back across to the reels, triggering an instant re-spin and the opportunity to achieve some generous bonus payouts. Cute animations and crazy music all add to the fun - we confidently predict that this is a game that will keep you amused and entertained, even if you’ve never played an online slots game before.
Other space-themed online slots games
If you’ve enjoyed playing Space Wars, then we’re willing to bet that you’ll be keen to discover other similar games with a space theme. Here at Slots Temple, we offer an excellent variety of space slots that you can enjoy playing with absolutely no financial outlay. Play purely for fun, or take advantage of the opportunity to see how your favourite games pan out over numerous spins, which can be extremely useful in informing your wagering strategy when you go on to play for real money.
If you like Space Wars, then you’re almost certain to love Reactoonz, a quirky space-themed game from Play n’ Go. You can also play Reactoonz free here on the Slots Temple website, before deciding whether to play at one of our partner sites for real cash.
As with Space Wars, Reactoonz features cute and cartoonish aliens, along with an atmospheric soundtrack, but this is where the similarity ends. The game doesn’t look like any other slots game, featuring a 7 x 7 grid of symbols and no paylines. In this game, wins are achieved by matching five symbols in adjacent spaces, much like the popular Bejewelled game. Unlike Bejewelled, however, these little critters on the reels have bags of personality. You don’t even have to play the game to enjoy watching them, as they slide sideways glances at each other and look as though they’re about to get up to mischief. Playing online slots games has never been so much fun!
The game provides much more than just entertainment though. Featuring multipliers and giant symbols, there are ample chances to achieve a big win, with 15 matching symbols in adjacent positions rewarding you with a potential 750x your original bet.
One of the most popular online slots games available to players, Starburst is another great title from NetEnt. But unlike Space Wars, there are no cute aliens or wacky sounds in this game. Starburst is elegant and sophisticated, with an engaging ambient soundtrack and cool, jewel-like graphics.
The game is an intriguing mix of old and new, featuring graphics that almost appear three-dimensional, along with some familiar symbols from land-based machines, such as the Bar and lucky number 7 symbols. Set against a backdrop of space, the jewel-bright colours and smooth gameplay draw the player in, where they discover just what makes this game so special.
Featuring a Win Both Ways system, which rewards players for matching symbols from right to left, as well as the more traditional left to right system, Starburst is a five-reel slots game with 10 paylines. Expanding Wilds, free spins and re-spins add extra value to the game, which has the potential to pay out a very significant 50,000 coins for players who achieve the jackpot.
