Theme & Graphic

This game has a unique theme, and possibly introduces a new historical story to many players. Based on the Wako (or wokou), it celebrates the story of Japanese piracy from the 13th to the 16th centuries. Despite the excellent, and unique, narrative, the graphics are disappointingly dated. The soundtrack is also disappointing, making one think more of a Sunday night TV show than the adventure of piracy. The reels have been placed on the deck of a ship. They contain symbols synonymous with piracy and seafaring, including a ship’s wheel, swords, a map, and treasure. There is also a mother-of-pearl bonus symbol.

Expanding Wild

The wild pirate substitutes for all non-bonus symbols. He will also expand to fill the entire reel every time he lands. 

Stacked Scatter

From time to time, the dragon scatter may stack to fill an entire reel. When this happens, players will be awarded 3x total bet.

Mother of Pearl Accumulator

Every time this symbol appears, money is added to an accumulator on the right-hand side. The amount added is the equivalent of the total bet/5 (or the bet per line x 5). This accumulator comes into action in the map bonus feature (below).

Map Bonus Feature

It’s not just the pearls that are accumulating. Every time a flag symbol lands, these will accumulate too. Once you have collected eight flags, the Map Bonus Game will begin. During this feature, dice will roll and the boat will move accordingly along the map. The further it gets, the greater the multiplier. This will then be applied to your accumulated pearl amount to give you a total prize win.

Fishing Bonus

If two fishing symbols appear anywhere on the reels in the base game, the Fishing Bonus will be triggered. In this bonus game, a new underwater scene appears. Players pick fish, each revealing a prize, until the feature ends. At this point, all wins are added together and awarded.

Our slot review found that there’s a lot to get excited about in Wako, not least the map bonus feature. In this game, players move along a board to reach greater multipliers, the best of which applies to an accumulator amount. Unusually for an online slot, there is a second bonus game in the form of a fishing pick game. In the base game, the expanding wild and stacked scatter add extra wins too. The game has a low RTP of just 94%, which is certainly one of its disadvantages. Considering its age, it also has disappointingly poor graphics and an uninspiring soundtrack. Despite the shortcomings of this free slot, it’s worth taking a ride with the Wako pirates. You never know what you might haul in.
