Introduction

Theme, graphics and soundtrack

All credit to 5 Men Gaming for exploring new territory. Rather than some scene of violent revolution, the designers have chosen a huge factory setting for the backdrop, which is much more in tune with Marx’s writings. They have gone for Soviet-style piped martial music and the echoes of hammers and machinery. The symbols look a little disappointing, with the classic white-bearded Marx and a capitalist who looks more like a spiv. They have wrongly spelt the name of the book with a ‘C’ when it should read ‘Das Kapital’, but never mind.

How to play Book of Marx

1. Use the plus and minus symbols to select the number of lines you wish to play.
2. Use the plus and minus symbols to select your preferred bet per line.
3. Click the autoplay switch from off to on to start using automatic spins. You cannot select a number of plays but you can switch it off again at any time. There is no autoplay menu, so you can’t set any loss, gain or win limits. 
4. Click the start button or press the spacebar to start playing using the current total bet value. 
5. Press the start button again to stop the reels at any time during the spin.
6. The balance meter to the bottom left of the screen displays your current balance, which is constantly updated.
7. All combinations pay out from left to right except the scatter symbols, which pay in any position on the screen. The highest win only is paid on each selected line. Scatter wins and line wins are added together
8. If three or more scatter symbols land on the screen, they will trigger ten free games with a special expanding symbol. This symbol cannot be substituted by a scatter symbol during the free games.

Gamble 

The gamble option gives you the chance to gamble any time you win. You can click ‘collect’ to save your winnings or ‘gamble’ to try to double them. There is a series of steps and you click the lowest for your first gable and continue with all six steps until you reach the top or you gamble incorrectly and the feature ends. Not available in autoplay mode.

Bonus feature

A special expanding symbol is selected at random at the start of the active free games round. During the free games and after the payout for the regular symbols, the special symbol may expand to cover three positions on the reel. It pays out like the regular symbol but even on non-adjacent positions and on all the lines played. The expanding symbol is triggered only if there are enough symbols present for a win.

Book of Marx review: our verdict

The theme is refreshingly unusual but the game itself is a little ordinary. The bonus feature doesn’t amount to much and the RTP is very low. The graphics, although original, are a little crude. The gamble feature is a nice departure from the standard playing card format but it doesn’t really make up for a lack of inspiration in the rest of the gameplay.
