Game Theme & Storyline

El Cartel gives you the chance to live out your fantasies of joining an illicit drug cartel. In the base game, you’ll find a nondescript man carrying a briefcase overflowing with cash. The upper game features his female associate ready to collect overdue debt.

Graphics & Soundtrack

The game is styled after classic fruit machines, with symbols including lemons, plums, bells, and diamonds. The controls are also reminiscent of land-based slot machines and even light up if you leave the game idle!

The graphics include simple animations with no fancy animations or 3D special effects to detract from the story. The characters look remarkably friendly for crime lords, and the reels include themed symbols such as an escape Jeep and piles of cash alongside traditional symbols.

There isn’t much of a soundtrack in El Cartel, other than a soft ‘whir’ and ‘clink’ when buttons are pressed and the reels spin.

How to Play

Anyone familiar with MGA slots should recognise the layout of the controls in this game as it’s very similar to the styles used in some of their other titles - notably Asalto al Banco. You spin the reels by clicking on the green ‘Play’ button on the far right of the control line. To the left of the Play button, you can adjust your bet, and the ‘Change Game’ button allows you to move to the secondary game once you’ve accumulated enough credits.

The three orange ‘Nudge’ buttons in the middle of the controls relate to each of the three reels and can be used when you trigger the nudge feature. You’ll know when you have these as a voice will notify you and the bullets along the bottom of the screens will light up.

The white ‘Auto’ button allows you to select a number of automatic spins, and the blue button with three lines pulls up the game’s info, settings and more. The red ‘Collect’ button on the far left allows you to avoid the gambling option.

Bet Sizes & Maximum Win

Bets can be placed from 5 up to 75 credits per spin. The highest-value combination you can make in the main game is three blue diamonds, which awards a maximum of 15,000 coins when you’re at the highest bet limit.

Bonus Features

There are four mini games in total in El Cartel, three of which are only available in the second game.

The first mini bonus game is triggered when you land three Jeep symbols along a single payline. This game asks you to choose your character’s getaway vehicle from a junkyard. Each vehicle is more than just a getaway car; they each have various amounts of cash hidden in them!

The second bonus game is available in the upper game and is triggered when you find three Light Aircraft symbols along any of the eight available paylines. Here, you’ll be asked to dictate the direction of the aircrafts to determine the size of your winnings.

The third bonus game is also triggered in the upper game when you find three women along a payline conspiring with our criminals. Enter the club they work in to uncover the rewards they hide.

Finally, the fourth bonus game is also part of the upper game and triggers with three briefcases. This is a Deal-or-No-Deal-style game where you can accept the reward offered to you or open one of the briefcases in the hopes of a better deal.

RTP & Volatility

The RTP (Return To Player) of El Cartel is 95%, which is about the lowest we’re happy to accept from an online slot. The variance is stated as medium, but we would warn players to watch their bankroll because those bonus ‘Plata’ points are very alluring as they open the upper game, which offers more paylines and more chances to win better prizes.

Other Games You Might Like

If you enjoyed El Cartel, you’re sure to enjoy Asalto al Banco. Also immersing you in a criminal world, this game plays very similarly to El Cartel but focuses on bank robbers rather than drug lords.

You may also enjoy NetEnt’s Narcos slot. Based on the popular TV show, this slot offers 243 Ways to Win with a wide betting limit and plenty of exciting bonus features.

Going back to a more traditional fruit machine slot, Break Da Bank and Break Da Bank Again are both hugely popular classic slots from Mircrogaming.

Our Verdict

Overall, we really enjoyed El Cartel, although we must admit taking our eye off the ball and rapidly diminishing our bankroll! The upper game took a while to trigger, which was a shame, and the mini games were really elusive when we played but great fun when they were triggered. We liked the overall look of the game and the fruit machine style with ‘nudge’ and ‘hold’ buttons that are somehow missing from more modern slots.
