Flash Gordon, the saviour of the universe, needs your help! Join him and his companions, Dr. Zarkov and Dale Arden in the race to beat evil Ming the Merciless, and hopefully bag yourself some rewards in the process! Set in deep space, the game takes you through the realms of Mongo, forests of Arboria, flying city of the Hawkmen and the interior of Flash’s awesome rocket in four exciting mini games.

Graphics & Soundtrack

Based on the 1930's comic, Flash Gordon utilises classic cartoon/comic-book style animations, with symbols including his superfast rocketship alongside more traditional bells, fruits, and coloured diamonds.

The game itself has been styled on a classic fruit machine as is typical for this game maker, with coloured machine button controls along the bottom and a handy paytable to the right of the reels. There is also a useful banner reminding you of the special symbols along the top.

The sound effects are also in keeping with MGA’s usual choices and feature subtle whirrs and clicks when you spin the reels, plus musical elements during the special features.

How to Play

The controls for Flash Gordon are all in a row beneath the reels. Starting on the far right, you’ll find the green ‘Play’ button that allows you to spin the reels and take advantage of the gamble feature in the game. The ‘Bet’ button enables you to change your wager and the ‘Change Game’ option lets you move to the upper game once you’ve accumulated bonus points.

The three orange ‘Nudge’ buttons in the middle relate to the three reels and can be used to nudge or hold reels when this feature is engaged. The ‘Auto’ button turns auto spinning on/off and you can set the number of automatic spins using the blue button with three lines from 5 spins up to 100. This button also contains the game info and settings.

The final button is ‘Collect’ and clicking this following a win allows you to collect your winnings without entering the gamble game.

Bet Sizes & Maximum Win

You can place your bet in Flash Gordon anywhere from 0.20 up to 15 coins. The list of symbols and their values also changes as you adjust your bet so you always know how much winning potential you have. The highest value symbol in the base game is the blue diamond which is worth up to 15,000 when you place the maximum bet if you find three along the payline.

Bonus Features

There are four fun mini games available in Flash Gordon, one that can be triggered in the base game and three in the upper game.

- Bonus One

The first mini game is triggered in the base game when you land three rockets along the payline. This takes you to the interior of Flash Gordon’s ship where you’ll find Flash and his crew alternately being lit up. Click the ‘Play’ button to stop the highlight moving and win the value you land on.

- Bonus Two

The next game is triggered in the upper game when you land three Vultan warriors. Pick a direction for the warriors to fly in to uncover the value of your reward.

- Bonus Three

Find three Arboria figures in the upper game to travel to the forests of Arboria and pop bubbles with different values.

- Bonus Four

Land three Ming City symbols along a payline to travel to evil Ming the Merciless’ headquarters to play Ming’s Kingdom and defeat the evil overlord.

- Upper Game

When you have enough Flash bonus points and credits, you can click ‘Change Game’ to head to the upper game where Ming is holding Dale hostage. Featuring 8 paylines and the chance to trigger the extra three bonus games, the upper game is filled with plenty of winning potential and fun to be enjoyed.

RTP & Volatility

Whilst MGA have announced Flash Gordon as a medium volatility game, they haven’t released the RTP. In theory, this means that Flash Gordon should offer plenty of winning potential, with small prizes being paid out frequently but higher rewards harder to land.

Our Verdict

In conclusion, we really enjoyed Flash Gordon as a fun throwback to one of our favourite comic books. The graphics were well thought out and looked perfectly in place with the comic that inspired the game. The mini games weren’t too difficult to trigger and offered additional excitement and we particularly loved that they maintained places visited by Flash in the original stories. We found it a little tricky to gain enough Flash points to get to the upper game without diminishing our bankroll, which was a shame, and we would like to see MGA release the RTP for Flash Gordon so we can discuss this more.
