Lightning Roulette Overview

Every so often, a developer will try to come up with another version of roulette with varying degrees of success. Rather than just adding new types of bet, as in many previous attempts, Evolution decided to try something more like a slot by adding some additional multipliers through a random number generator (RNG) with a presentation like a game show. The original Lightning Roulette was introduced to the world in 2018.

Taking European roulette as its base, Lightning Roulette has a single 0 and 36 numbers. The styling is Art Deco influenced - the classic style of early 20th-century France that spread across Europe and America, allowing for clean lines and geometric shapes without allowing the black and gold colour scheme to become too over-the-top.

How to Play Lightning Roulette

Bets Are Laid

You’ll see a table with a 3x12 grid laying out all 36 numbers from the roulette wheel. You can put your chip on one or more of these numbers to bet on where the wheel will land. This is an inside bet, which could be straight up, split, street, corner or six-line. To make an outside bet, one that covers an entire category (such as colour, odd/even, high/low, column or dozens), place your chip into the appropriately labelled box next to the grid. The minimum bet is 20p.

Lucky Numbers Are Assigned

Only when all bets have been made and fixed can lucky numbers be assigned. The presenter will pull a lever to represent the release of the lightning. Between one and five numbers will then be designated as lucky numbers, each with its own multiplier of between 50x and 500x. These numbers will only apply if you win on a straight-up bet.

The Wheel Spins

At the heart of any game of roulette is the spinning of the wheel. Once it gets going, it’s totally random, running on automatic. You don’t control how long it takes to stop or what happens to the ball as it bounces around between the pockets, eventually settling into its final position.

How to Win

Winning is the same as in any regular roulette game. The wheel stops spinning, the ball bounces into a pocket, and if that pocket shares a number and/or colour with your chosen bets, that’s when you receive a corresponding payout. For straight-up bets only, winning could also mean landing on one of the randomly designated lucky numbers to pick up a multiplier prize.

Know When to Stop

Responsible gambling is always key when you’re playing roulette. You should have set your budget and limits before you started, but staying on top of them as you play, no matter how exciting, is particularly important. When you reach a satisfying single win, or you hit the level of loss that starts to deplete your balance in a worrying way, or if you’ve been playing long enough to reach the end of your regular session length, it’s time to walk away. Functions such as self-exclusion, available in most casinos, can help if you’re having trouble stopping.

Special Features

This is what sets Lightning Roulette apart from other Evolution Gaming casino games: the special feature of its lightning strikes, decided by a random number generator (RNG). Once you’ve placed your bet and it’s been accepted, the presenter pulls a lever to symbolise the game randomly selecting between one and five numbers to become lucky. These are the numbers that are struck by lightning, applying multipliers to their regular values so that a single number bet can be boosted by a minimum of x50, up to maximum of x500.

The random nature means you still need to be cautious in how you play, just like in all forms of gambling. Don’t chase losses looking for the lightning. Take a timeout if you’ve hit your budget or session length limits.

Betting Options

There are certain types of bet that you’d expect to see in a classic roulette game, and Lightning Roulette has incorporated them into its own mechanics:

  • Straight Up: a bet on one specific number.

  • Split: a bet on two neighbouring numbers, made by placing your chip to overlap both.

  • Street: a bet on the three numbers in the same row.

  • Square: a bet on four adjacent numbers where the chip is placed on the corner where the four meet.

  • Six Line: a bet on two rows of three numbers at once, thereby covering six numbers.

  • Column: a bet on any number in a single column, which covers twelve numbers in all.

  • Dozens: a bet on a number falling within one of the three sets of twelve numbers used to divide the roulette table.

50/50 Bets

Then there are the three types of 50/50 bet, where you have an equal likelihood of winning or losing:

  • Red/Black: a bet on the colour. There are 18 reds and 18 blacks.

  • Odd/Even: a bet on whether the ball lands on an odd or even number.

  • Low/High: a bet on whether the result is 1–18 or 19–36.

Inside bets are more specific and include straight-up, split, street, corner and six-line bets. They pay more but are harder to hit. Outside bets generally involve categories, including the 50/50 bets, columns and dozens, all of which allow you to cover a larger selection of numbers and therefore improve your chances of a win.

Payouts

  • Straight Up: 29:1 (with possible multipliers of 50x–500x)

  • Split: 17:1

  • Street: 11:1

  • Square: 8:1

  • Six Line: 5:1

  • Column: 2:1

  • Dozens: 2:1

  • Red/Black: 1:1

  • Odd/Even: 1:1

  • Low/High: 1:1

A traditional straight-up bet in classic roulette would come with a 35:1 payout. In Lightning Roulette it’s lower, but it’s also the only bet that may come with a lightning multiplier of 50x, 100x, 200x, 300x, 400x or 500x.

Optimal Strategy

Some live casino games involve a mix of luck and strategy, like poker. Roulette is about as chance-based as they come. There’s no way to influence where the ball lands. Either you placed your chip on a winning number/colour or you didn’t.

That means that strategy for this game is mostly about watching your budget and limits and balancing them with your taste for risk. Inside bets tend to offer higher payouts, but there’s less chance of success because they’re more specific. Outside bets, which tend to cover whole categories, present a higher chance of a win, but the prize is likely to be lower, with 50/50 bets the safest of all.

Game Controls

  1. In the top corner you’ll find a settings button as well as separate controls for sound and full screen mode.

  2. This top corner is also where you’ll find a link to the help page so you can fully inform yourself on the rules, payout potential and features.

  3. At the bottom of the screen you’ll see your balance and current bet. Keep an eye on them so you can track your budget and limits.

  4. There are a few more buttons in the bottom right corner, such as statistics and a link to the lobby.

  5. Directly in front of you is the table, with its numbers laid out on a 3x12 grid and boxes for any outside bets. Click to place your chips and make a bet of your own.

  6. When bets are confirmed, the host pulls the lever so lightning-touched banners can hang from the top of the screen designating lucky numbers and their respective multipliers.

  7. Behind the table and under the multipliers you can see the roulette wheel, which will now come into focus as it spins.

FAQs

What is the “lightning” in Lightning Roulette?

It’s something that can strike single numbers in straight-up bets. These then become lucky numbers, bearing a multiplier value on top of the regular 30:1 payout. Multipliers start at a value of x50, but they could go up to x500. It’s important to remember that these multipliers are assigned at random, just like a lightning strike.

What is the top prize available?

What allows Lightning Roulette to have higher payouts than you might expect in standard European roulette is the presence of multipliers. These can attach to single numbers to boost their payouts, meaning they’re only available for straight-up bets that are otherwise worth 30:1. Lightning strikes at random, with the top potential prize sitting at x500.

What is the RTP for the base game?

The return to player average, or RTP, for Lightning Roulette is calculated between 97.1% and 97.3%. The volatility varies depending on your type of bet. Inside bets have higher volatility, as wins are higher but rarer. Outside bets offer lower volatility with smaller but more frequent wins.

Are there any side bets?

Unlike other variations of roulette, which may experiment with side bets, Lightning Roulette uses the standard set of bets available with a European roulette wheel. They’re divided into inside and outside bets and include straight-ups, splits, streets, corners, six lines, columns, dozens, red/black, odd/even and low/high. The special lightning feature is unrelated to your bet.
