Our first impressions of Medusa Megaways
As soon as the game began loading, we knew we were in for a real treat. Rich colours and sweeping vistas manage to convey the heat of the evening sun as it sets over the ancient ruins and temples of Greece. The parched earth is cracked and dry underfoot, with temple ruins littering the background against a dark and bruised-looking sky. It’s a very atmospheric scene, heightened by the eerie music and occasional sounds of a hissing snake - Medusa’s hair was famously made up of snakes, so it’s a suitable backing sound, and one that crops up throughout the game.
Six vertical reels, topped by one horizontal reel, take centre stage. The structure that supports the reels has been created in an elegant style, topped with an ornately-decorated roof. The background to the reels has been kept to a simple white marbled design, so that the icons really stand out as the reels spin. From time to time lightning shoots across the sky, and the reels shake as thunder booms. It’s highly atmospheric and makes for an engaging and immersive game, which is what we’ve come to expect from the mighty NextGen game development team.
Medusa Megaways Online Slot Theme
The original Medusa slot is one of the most popular games in NextGen’s collection. Even though it seems like a pretty much perfect online slot, there’s always room for improvement – and, NextGen saw that potential to create an even bigger and better game with the launch of Medusa Megaways.
This time around, NextGen has equipped Medusa with the Megaways mechanic that has been licensed from Big Time Gaming. As such, it has a similar theme with vibrant graphics that take players on a journey through Greek mythology. There are even some 3D bits here, where Medusa jumps off the screen during the free spins round. Overall, the look of the game is very eye-catching and delivers a fun gaming experience.
Medusa Megaways paytable
You can access the paytable and rules for Medusa Megaways through the Settings menu, which is to the left of the Spin button. But to save you the time and trouble of working out which symbols you’ll want to see lining up across each reel, we’ve done the hard work for you.
Playing cards don’t have any resonance with the Greek mythology theme, but most online slots games use them to represent low-value symbols, and the designers behind Medusa Megaways saw no reason to buck the trend. But they’ve been given a thorough makeover, so they fit in perfectly with the overall aesthetics of the game. Spin up six-of-a-kind of either the A, K, Q, J or 10, and you’ll be rewarded with 10x the amount of your stake.
The higher-value symbols of the game more closely tie in with the Ancient Greek theme, along with the culture’s associated mythology. Top prize for spinning up the winged sandals of Hermes, is 20x your stake, rising to 30x for landing a ring symbol on each of the six vertical reels. Spin up six pendants to be awarded 50x your stake, whilst six shield icons bring in a cash prize of 100x. Top cash payouts come from spinning up six Pegasus symbols, which will see your game balance increase by a whopping 750x.
More about how to win at Medusa Megaways
The majority of online slots games require players to line up three or more matching symbol across an active payline, in order to achieve a winning combination and win the associated cash prize. But since Medusa Megaways is, as the name suggests, a Megaways title, the usual mechanics don’t apply.
To land a win at the reels of Medusa Megaways, you need to spin up matching symbols on adjacent reels, and they don’t even have to be touching each other. The only criterion is that the first instance of a winning combination must always appear on the first reel, furthest to the left of the screen. In the case of most of the symbols on the reels of Medusa Megaways, you’ll need to spin matching symbols on at least reels 1, 2 and 3, in any position, to win a cash prize. But in the case of Pegasus, the legendary winged horse of Greek mythology, spinning up just two examples, on reel 1 and 2, will bring you a cash reward.
Online slots games usually have a Wild, which can represent all other symbols in the game, apart from Special Bonus symbols and Scatters. In the case of Medusa Megaways, it’s Medusa herself who is the game’s Wild icon, helping to trigger payouts whenever she is able to complete a winning line. And of course, just as in the legend, she comes with her iconic Medusa Gaze. According to the mythology, looking into the face of Medusa guaranteed that you would immediately be turned to stone. But she’s obviously become a little more benevolent over time, as these days her gaze turns symbols Wild.
A Wild Medusa symbol appearing on the top, horizontal reel, will randomly trigger the Medusa Gaze reel modifier. As a mysterious green vapour rises up from below the reels, the form of Medusa herself takes shape in the reel below the original Wild. As she disappears from view, she may, or may not, transform one or more of the symbols on the reels into Wilds, thereby potentially creating more winning combinations for you.
About the Megaways mechanic, as used in Medusa Megaways
Traditionally, slots games have always relied on paylines. When the earliest classic fruit machines first came out, the games were incredibly simple, usually consisting of three reels, each with three symbols on display at any one time. And there was one single payline across the central row, denoting where symbols must land in specific combinations. Over time, the number of paylines increased, and as the gaming world began to move online, slots games started to become increasingly sophisticated.
As slots developers looked for new ways in which to present their games, new ways of achieving wins were created, with Ways to Win proving to be particularly popular. The Ways to Win mechanic completely does away with traditional paylines, only requiring winning symbols to appear on adjacent reels. So far, so good, but then Big Time Gaming came along and changed the face of online slots again, with the introduction of Dragon Born in 2016. This was the first time the Megaways mechanic had appeared in a game, and it quickly gained a massive fan base of enthusiastic slots gamers.
Before long, Big Time Gaming was attracting huge numbers of players, who were all dying to get their hands on Megaways games. And so the developer began issuing licenses to rival companies, allowing them to make use of this thrilling and innovative gaming mechanic. And since NextGen had already experienced so much success with the original Medusa slots game, the company was keen to introduce this new type of game into its portfolio, with the release of Medusa Megaways.
Ways to Win games have a fixed number of possible winning combinations, thanks to the constant number of rows appearing on every reel. But with the Megaways mechanic, there are variable numbers of symbols which spin up each time, giving up to 117,649 ways to win. But the actual number of ways to win varies with each spin, and is displayed above the reels with every spin. Each reel can hold a minimum of two symbols, with a maximum of seven symbols, in the case of reels 1 and 6, and a maximum of six for reels 2 - 5. A seventh, horizontal, reel runs along the top of the grid, adding an extra symbol to reels 2 - 5, which effectively creates up to seven rows for each reel.
As with most Megaways games, Medusa Megaways is highly volatile. But it also includes the hugely popular Avalanche Reels mechanic, which is also common to the majority of Megaways games. Tumbling Reels, Cascading Reels and Reel Reactions are other terms that are used to describe the phenomenon, by which players benefit from a free ‘respin’ with every win.
As the symbols fall into place, winning symbols are highlighted, before exploding - quite spectacularly, it has to be said - leaving huge gaps in the reels. And so new symbols fall down from above, completing the grid matrix, and possibly creating new winning combinations in the process. Any new wins are highlighted, and those symbols now explode, with new ones falling down. Hit multiple winning combinations and you’ll see some truly explosive reactions, which can keep going to generate some incredible cash prizes!
Medusa Megaways Free Spins and Bonuses
There is a reel along the top of the screen which can trigger bonuses. When 1 wild lands on the reel, you may trigger the Medusa’s Gaze bonus. This will duplicate the wild and add it to the reels below to help you land more wins.
You can also trigger the free spins round when three or more logo symbols land on the reels. You’ll receive 10 free spins for three scatters but every additional scatter, you get five extra free spins.
During this round, every win results in an increase of your multiplier. It starts at 2x and continues to grow as you land cascades and wins. There is no limit, so you can cash in some huge wins here.
The Snake Strike feature can be triggered during the free spins bonus. Whenever solider symbols appear on the top reel, the snakes can attack the soldiers and turn them into either wilds or scatters – offering you even more ways to win.
If you’re dying to trigger the Free Spins feature bonus round, but the Scatters simply aren’t spinning up in your favour, you have the option of Buying the feature for 100x your current stake. The total amount necessary to buy the feature is displayed just to the left-hand side of the reels, and tapping or clicking here will initiate the bonus round for you.
The Temptation feature comes into play at the end of the Free Spins round. You’ll be shown the amount of your winnings and invited to replay the round, which will result in the loss of this particular cash prize. Will you be tempted to try and increase the size of your prize pot? Or will you hang onto the money you’ve won, just in case you fail to achieve better results on your second attempt?
And if gambling is something that you particularly enjoy, you’ll be thrilled to discover that Medusa Megaways boasts a fun, optional Gamble side game that follows every winning spin. Before you spin the reels again, you’ll see a playing card suit icon glowing just above the Spin button.
Click here to be taken to the Gamble screen, where you can pick the colour of an upturned card to double the amount of your latest win. Or you can try to quadruple your win, by correctly guessing the suit of the card. But if you enjoy this extra side bet, note that it becomes deactivated when you use Autoplay. So if you want to keep the gambling option, you need to stick to manual spinning.
Medusa Megaways Demo Play
Medusa Megaways can be played for free here at Slots Temple. There’s no need for you to deposit at any online casinos, and you’re given 1000 free-play credits to spend on the game as you wish. We recommend playing between 150 and 200 free games, and make sure to try out the Buy Pass feature, which triggers the free spins round without requiring scatters to land on the reels.
It is possible to play Medusa Megaways for free and for money. Most players prefer to play for money - after all, this tends to be more exciting, and it is the only way that you will end up richer than you were before. However, there are still lots of people who love to play for free, which doesn’t surprise us, as there are lots of benefits to playing for free.
One of the main benefits of playing slots for free is that you won’t spend any money. This may seem obvious, but it is still a strong benefit - especially for people who love slots but want to cut down on their spending.
It can also be useful to play slots for free before playing them for money. Playing for free will teach you more about the ins and outs of the game; you will learn more about the bonus features and the special symbols, so if you decide to play for money later you will have a better idea of what to expect. This also means that you can work out if you actually like the game or not before spending any money, which is useful for players with a strict budget.
Playing for free will also remove any stress from the situation. You can still enjoy the thrilling parts of the slot, but there won’t be any low points as you’re not financially invested in the game. So if you are on a losing streak, it won’t be a problem.
Finally, playing for free means that you can play for as long as you want. For instance, you could spin the reels 500 times without having to stop! This is perfect for people who want to spend hours spinning the reels.
Medusa Megaways Graphics
If you have played the original Medusa Megaways, you will recognise the style of this game. Sure, the game has slightly different graphics, but they are drawn in a similar style, and the reels are pretty much identical. This isn’t a bad thing - in fact, players who love the first game will probably really appreciate the similar style!
While the game is loading, you will see a purple, cloudy sky, and at the bottom of the screen, you can see an empty city with an epic stone building at the side (it's actually pretty reminisent of Golden Goddess). The sky looks heavy with thunder, and it definitely seems like a storm is coming - but if you are lucky, you will ride out the storm and end up richer than before.
Once the game has loaded, the scene changes. Now you are in an empty, deserted city that is made from stone. You can see beautiful buildings crumbling in the background, and the ground is dry and parched. Above, you can see the sky, and it is still purple and stormy.
The reels are in the middle of the screen, and they are basically the same as the reels in the first game. They have a beautiful gold frame with golden snakes wrapped around it, and the reels are shaped like a Greek building. In fact, the top of the reels even have a golden roof, which is a nice touch. The middle of the reels are made from white marble, which adds a sense of luxury to the game.
This setting works really well with the Greek mythology theme - the only interesting thing is that you can’t see Medusa - although thinking about it, no-one ever gets to see her without immediately being turned into stone, so this isn’t a bad thing.
Overall, we really like the updated graphics. They stay true to the original graphic style, but they are more modern and more detailed, so the game is definitely more visually appealing. We also like that they changed the background, while keeping the reels the same.
The symbols for this game have also been updated, although they still fit in with the theme. There are both high paying symbols and low paying symbols, and the low paying symbols are represented by card numbers that range from 10 to Ace. These symbols are pretty basic, but they use a Greek-style font in bright, eye-catching colours.
The high paying symbols are represented by a series of items that could be found in ancient Greece. These include gold rings, sandals, soldiers, golden snakes and the mythical winged horse, Pegasus. This is a little strange, as Pegasus doesn’t feature in Medusa’s tale, but he definitely fits in with the Greek theme, so we aren’t complaining!
Medusa can also be found on the reels, and she is one of the special symbols for the game. She represents the game’s wild symbol, and she can be used to replace any of the standard symbols on the reels. The game also has a scatter symbol, and this is represented by the Medusa Megaways logo. Finally, there is a special symbol (that is represented by a soldier) that will only appear during the bonus round.
It is also worth noting that the high paying symbols have different values. The most valuable symbol on the reels is the Pegasus, as he will pay out 30 times your stake for six matching symbols.
Medusa Megaways Slot Volatility
Medusa Megaways is a high volatility slot. High volatility slots are very popular with players across the globe, and this is because they offer the biggest cash prizes that can be found in the slots world. High volatility slots can be found in both land-based and online casinos, and many of them have multipliers or big jackpot prizes.
However, it is important to be aware that high volatility slots are riskier than low to medium volatility slots. This is because they tend to pay out prizes less frequently, so you could play for quite a while without triggering a prize. In fact, it is fairly normal to spin the reels 50 to 100 times without winning one single cash prize! This isn’t ideal for players with a strict budget, as it is easy to spend a lot of money without winning anything - but if you are feeling lucky and you have money to blow, you might be tempted to spin the reels with a high volatility slot. After all, this is perhaps the easiest way to win a huge prize - and it is also a lot of fun spinning the reels with a high risk slot.
Why does RTP matter when playing Medusa Megaways?
We’ve often seen other online slots sites claiming that players can use RTP to assess how much they’ll win when playing a specific game at an online casino. And we’d like to put it out there straight away that it’s simply not possible to calculate how much you’ll win with any degree of accuracy, due to the very nature of slots gaming. So if you’re not sure what RTP is, or why it matters, here’s everything you need to know.
With an RTP of 96.28%, Medusa Megaways tells us straight away, before we so much as spin a single reel, that it’s a fair and legitimate game. That’s because we know immediately that the game has been thoroughly tested, according to stringent standards set out by online casino regulators. RTP ratios have to be calculated using strict processes, with testing periods covering several weeks and involving hundreds of players.
When the mathematicians had finished their number crunching on all the data thrown up by RTP testing on Medusa Megaways, it was found that the game pays out, on average, 96.28 for every 100.00 that is spent playing it. But remember, that’s an average figure, so it’s purely theoretical. Few players, if any, will have actually seen that exact return. Some players will fail to see any of their stake returned in the form of cash prizes. Other players will hit big payouts within just a few spins. That’s the whole point of slots gaming, after all, and what makes it so much fun!
But as well as letting you know that a game is perfectly fair, and that it’s been well tested by industry experts, there’s a further piece of information that it shows up too. And that’s the house edge. To find it, just subtract a game’s RTP from 100. In the case of Medusa Megaways, that gives a house edge of 3.72%, which is a figure we feel very drawn to. We suggest sticking to games with a house edge of 5% or less, so we’re happy to see that Medusa Megaways falls well within those limits, making it a comfortable prospect to play for real money at an online casino.
Play Medusa Megaways on Mobile – Android, iPad and Tablets
Medusa Megaways is a mobile-optimised slot game and it will resize to fit any screen. Whether you’re playing on a tablet, smartphone or PC, this slot will look great with vibrant graphics and impressive gameplay. You don’t have to download any software, either, as the game loads directly within your web browser.
Other Games You Might Like If You Enjoyed Medusa Megaways
If you enjoyed spinning the reels with Medusa Megaways and you want to find other slots with similar features, we can help. The internet is filled with thousands of slots, so there are lots of other high volatility games with similar themes. Here are four other games that you might like if you enjoyed Medusa Megaways.
300 Shields by Next Gen Gaming
300 Shields doesn’t have a Medusa theme, but it does have a Greek theme. It is also another high volatility slot, so if you enjoyed Medusa Megaways, it is very likely that you will enjoy this game too. 300 Shields focuses on the 300 Spartan soldiers who managed to hold off an army of 10,000 Persian men - and if you are lucky, you will manage to win some big cash prizes as the reels turn.
The game has 5 reels and 25 paylines, and there are lots of generous bonus features that can pay out big prizes. The graphics also look really good!
Rich Wilde and the Book of the Dead by Play’n GO
Rich Wilde and the Book of the Dead is one of the most popular high volatility slots that can be found online. The game was first released in 2016, so it is fairly modern, and it has an Indiana Jones style theme that will appeal to lots of players. There are 5 reels and 10 paylines, and if you manage to collect three scatter symbols, you will trigger a generous free spins bonus round.
Medusa’s Gaze by Playtech
If you want to find another slot with a Medusa theme, there are lots to choose from - after all, Medusa is a huge part of Greek mythology, and Greek mythology features heavily in slot games - but some slots are definitely better than others. One of the best Medusa-themed slots has to be Medusa’s Gaze from Playtech. The game has good graphics, enjoyable gameplay and a selection of bonus features for players to discover as the reels turn.
Medusa’s Lair from Bally Wulff
Medusa’s Lair is another Medusa-themed game with excellent graphics and a good soundtrack. The gameplay is also fun and fairly fast-paced, although this isn’t a high volatility slot. The slot doesn’t have much in the way of bonus features, but there are expanding wilds that you can use to boost your winnings - and once again, the gameplay is a lot of fun, so the lack of bonus features isn’t necessarily a problem. However, this slot isn’t really ideal for players who love bonus features!
In-depth guide to playing Medusa Megaways
With no paylines to worry about, all you need to do to get the game started, is to decide on how much to wager for every single spin of the reels. Minimum stakes are just 0.25 per spin, rising to a maximum of 25.00 per spin, which is where the high rollers are likely to position themselves in the hope of spinning up one of the top cash prizes. Then all that remains is to click or tap on the Spin button and see where the reels take you.
For convenience, all of the game’s controls are centred around the Spin button, which has been positioned just to the right-hand side of the reels. Click or tap just above and just below the Spin button to adjust the size of your bet. If you’re playing at the same bet level for multiple spins, you’ll almost certainly find it easier to deploy the Autoplay function, which delivers up to 100 automatic spins, saving you the time and trouble of repeatedly hitting Spin. Don’t panic if you see your balance draining away faster than you’d like - another tap or click on Spin will deactivate Autoplay and return manual controls of your spinning session back to you again.
To the right of Spin is the Autoplay function, which you can set to deliver 10, 25, 50 or 100 automatic spins. This is a particularly useful feature when you’re playing a game in demo mode, giving multiple spins at the same bet level, so you can watch how the game plays out over time. But always use it with caution when playing for real money. It can be all too easy to get completely caught up in watching the symbols match up on the reels, and before you know it, your balance can be dwindling away to nothing.
You need to take particular care with Autoplay when playing Medusa Megaways, because it’s such a high-volatility game. Periods between significant wins can be very long, so be prepared to step in and end Autoplay early if the reels aren’t spinning your way. Just hit the Spin button to deactivate the feature.
Overall Review – Medusa Megaways Slot
If you’re a fan of the original Medusa slot, then you’ll definitely enjoy the new and improved Medusa Megaways game. The look and feel of the two games are similar, but there’s a bit more excitement to this game. The Megaways and Reactions offer up many more thrills so you can claim some fantastic prizes while playing this game. The free spins round is also incredibly generous, as the increasing multipliers can just keep going and going and going.

Really like megaways at the moment as am getting some good wins. Definitely one of the best as there are plenty of free spins and other features. Like the way you can buy the pass to the free spins and gamble your wins. Reached 7x on a gamble that paid off so well worth it.
