NetEnt is one of the biggest names in the gaming world but only releases new slots sporadically – so, we’re always very excited when this studio comes out with fresh content. In Rome: The Golden Age, NetEnt brings some new features to its game collection with transforming symbols, respin-style free spins and multiplier meters which combine for a thrilling experience.
Theme and Graphics
When it comes to online slots, the Roman Empire is an era that we just don’t see represented all that much, so it’s nice to see a developer delve into this time period. It’s such an interesting, elegant aesthetic and NetEnt has done a beautiful job of depicting it with towering columns and beautiful marble statues on either side of the reels.
The actual set of reels, though, doesn’t seem to suit its surroundings, though. The symbols look cartoonish in comparison so the whole thing doesn’t look like it all vibes very well.
RTP and Variance
The RTP (return to player) of Rome: The Golden Age has a payout percentage of 96.02%. It’s also a highly volatile slot – with a hugely impressive top prize worth 100,000x your stake. There are few other games that offer max wins at this level – San Quentin is one such slot that comes to mind, with its top prize of 150,000x.
How to Win
There are 20 paylines in NetEnt’s Rome: The Golden Age online slot, and wins are made by landing three or more matching symbols on any of them. The tiger is the most generous symbol in the game, awarding a top prize of 5x; the wild offers the same prize, but only pays out for 5-of-a-kind wins.
Golden Frames and Transforming Wilds
Whenever a Golden Age symbol lands on the reels, a golden frame is added to that symbol position. At random, one Golden Age symbol will turn into a ROME symbol; then, on then next spin, any frame symbols that are adjacent to the ROME symbol will turn wild. Those frames will then disappear for the process to start over.
Collect Symbols to Increase Free Spins Multiplier
During the base game, you’ll notice a meter on the left side of the reels. Whenever you land Golden Age symbols, they will charge the meter by between 1 and 4 points. Once 200 points have been collected, the multiplier value on the right side of the reels will increase. The multiplier value starts a 1x and can increase all the way up to 1000x – with 17 stops in between from 2x to 750x.
Free Spins and Bonuses
The bonus game is triggered when you land three scatters. Any wild frames that are present at the time of triggering the bonus will be held in place as symbols during the bonus.
The bonus in Rome: The Golden Age is more of a respins round – the likes of which you’ve seen in games like Money Train. Your meter begins at 3 spins and resets to 3 any time a new symbol lands on the reels.
When a symbol lands, it will show a value worth between .5x and 50x your bet. Once you’ve filled the reels entirely or you’ve run out of spins, all the values will be totalled up and awarded as prizes. The multiplier will also be applied to your win.
The multiplier meter is an interesting addition but it is very difficult to charge. When you think of games where you can collect coins (like Reel Rush 2 or games in the Kingdoms Rise series), it’s not hugely laborious – but in Rome: The Golden Age, you’ll be spinning for quite a long time before you collect the 200 points necessary just to get a 2x multiplier.
The upside, though, is that the sky is the limit. If you don’t manage to trigger the free spins round for a while, you can see that multiplier climb incredibly high. Even though it’s hugely unlikely that you’ll claim that 1000x multiplier, even landing one of the smaller values will boost your bonus winnings significantly.
Overall, Rome: The Golden Age offers a fun experience. Even though it is a high volatility game, the symbol collection and transforming wilds keep things interesting during the base game. So, you’re looking at an engaging gaming experience as you spin the reels on this slot.
