If you like Game of Thrones, and who doesn’t, Warlords: Crystals of Power may be just the game for you.

This is a 5 reel, 30 payline video slot from NetEnt. It's also a 3D game - so the visual aspect is really worth taking a look at. The intro sequence is stunning too - the wolf in it appears completely 3D, so try and catch it at least once. The whole presentation looks like a cross between a video game and a slot. It definitely points towards future developments where games and slots may merge, and a future beyond that, where 3D and virtual reality will become a feature of slots. Can’t wait!

Warlords: Crystals of Power - Three Warlords, Three Crystals

This is a massive NetEnt in-house production, as you can tell from the production values which are immediately apparent. The story takes place after there has been years of war on earth, and now there are just three remaining warlords: the Samurai, the Barbarian and the Priestess. Each has a crystal that gives them power and each wants to get all the crystals for themselves. There's a distinct Game of Thrones feel to the backdrops, and the Battle feature between two of the warlords reminds us of a certain other battle in Thrones (BoB anyone?).

There's animation and a big slice of interactive play. NetEnt has pushed the boundaries with this big-budget special, and it shows.

Join the Battle with Warlords: Crystals of Power

During the gameplay, you can initiate a battle between the three warlords, but be careful what you wish for! This game has the lot really: wild substitutions, sticky wilds, stacked symbols, free spins, respins, increasing multipliers, random features, scatters, animation, interaction and a battle - how much better does it get?

Graphics in Warlords: Crystals of Power

The three warlords are coloured to match their own crystal. The Samurai, who is the red warlord, features in the stunning intro video, where he is sitting at the edge of a room which drops away to show a whole world in the distance. The wolf, which looks amazing, brings a red crystal and pushes it towards him. Meanwhile, the green crystal is opened by the Green Warlord. She is a priestess and has a glossy black jaguar as her animal. And the blue crystal belongs to the fearsome barbarian, who has a wild boar with savage tusks as his animal. Each of the warlords has a mask which features their crystal and their colour. The wild, of course, is a clasp or brooch featuring all three crystals set in gold.

In the background of the slot, soldiers move across a windswept plain and warlords stand ready for battle, their robes whipped up in the wind, and their weapons swinging at the ready.

When you start playing, you’ll notice that each warlord takes up three full slots on the reel. A winning row is surrounded by fire and special effects, as your win is displayed. If the winning symbol is the wolf, an animated jaw snaps in the middle of the fire, and the wolf's eyes blaze red. The wild board opens its huge mouth wider. The Goddess can take up a battle position, with an arrow ready to fire, and her jaguar lunging towards the enemy, out of the slot.

The battle involves raging fire and exploding crystals. And the free spins part of the game changes according to which warlord is giving the free spins.

We’ve come a long way from three cherries in a row haven’t we?

Warlords: Crystals of Power - The Spoils of War

Let's start with the basic values for each symbol, when it occurs in combination. The red Samurai warlord is the highest earner - five give you 300, four give you 60 and three give you 15. The green Priestess warlord is the next highest - five give you 200, four give you 50 and three give you 12. The blue Barbarian warlord is the lowest scoring, with five giving you 150, four giving you 45 and three giving you 10.

The animals follow their respective warlords in order of value. Five wolves give you 120, four wolves 40 and three wolves 5. Five jaguars give you 90, four jaguars give you 35 and three jaguars 5. Five wild boar give you 75, four wild boar 30 and three wild boar 5.

Again, the masks follow the warlord in winnings order. Five of the samurai mask will earn you 60, four will earn you 25 and three will earn you 3. Five of the elegant feathery green mask that belongs to the Priestess will earn you 50, four will earn you 20 and three will earn you three. And finally, five of the Barbarian's blue mask will earn you 40, four will earn you 15, and three will earn you 3.

Warlords Go Wild

Warlords: Crystals of Power has a wild symbol and a random overlay wild. The main wild is the brooch or clasp, combining all three crystals in a beautiful gold setting and this substitutes for everything except the scatters. Remember that the scatters are individual to each warlord.

Any spin in the main game can activate the Random Overlay wild feature. This is, in effect, three features, each individual to a warlord. The Samurai has a sword feature, which can give two to five wild symbols on reels 1 to 4. The Priestess has an arrow feature, which also gives two to five wild symbols but this time, on reels 1 to 5. The Barbarian has a hammer feature and this can appear on reels 1 to 4, as a square awarding 4 wild symbols. When the feature starts, the symbols are overlaid by the Overlay Wild symbols.

In Warlords: Crystals of Power - Warlords Don’t Share!

You can’t expect these three warlords to share a scatter, and so the game has to have three of them. These take the form of flags in the colours of each warlord, each bearing the warlord's symbol - swords (red, the Samurai), hammer (blue, the Barbarian), or bow and arrow (green, the Priestess). Each scatter has a free spins game connected with it.

In the main game, each of these scatters first gives you the corresponding game feature. This Is either three free spins, one multiplier or one sticky wild. The free spins game that you get, depends on what type of scatter is on the reels. In the case of the Samurai free spins, the position of the scatter on the reels also matters.

If you get the same type of scatter symbols, the respins start straight away. But if the scatter symbols are not the same, they will randomly transform themselves, so that they are the same before the respin starts. As you can see, this is definitely a game that demands your full attention! It also rewards that attention with some absorbing gameplay.

Warlords: Crystals of Power - Let Battle Commence!

OK, hold on, you may need to lie down in a darkened room after this set of instructions, unless you've been following the plot of Game of Thrones, in which case your brain synapses will be all wired up ready.

As we know, if two different scatter symbols show up on the reels, after a battle, one scatter symbol gets randomly chosen to transform into the other symbol before the respins begin. There is an evens chance of which symbol will get chosen as the currently active scatter.

So what happens if three different scatters show up on the reels and two are one type, while one is another type? It's always a possibility, as there are three different warlords, each with their own scatter. After a battle, the scatters will become the same type before the respins start. In this event, there's a 75% probability that the symbol with the two scatter symbols will be the active one.

The final scenario is that three different scatter symbols appear. After a battle, they will also transform into the same type before the respins. There is an equal chance of any of the three symbols becoming the active symbol.

Three Warlords - Three Types of Spin

In keeping with the rest of the game, there are three different kinds of free spin, that match the three characters. Barbarian free spins have the blue hammer scatter and will give a maximum of nine free spins. The Priestess scatter gives seven free spins, and the Samurai scatter gives five free spins.

Note that both free spins and respins use a different set of reels from the base game spins. (That's the beauty of virtual reels isn’t it?) The free spin reels only contain the same scatter as the one that started the free spins round. In Barbarian free spins, only animal and warrior symbols are on the reels, and a new scatter symbol adds three extra free spins. In Priestess free spins, an extra scatter increases the multiplier by one for each scatter. And in Samurai free spins, the scatter becomes a sticky wild for the whole duration of the feature.

OK, so if you followed the explanation above, you know that when the respins start, all the scatter symbols have become the same. Once the respins start, the active scatters stay where they are and all the other symbols don’t do anything. There are no added bet line wins during the respin function.

Now then - still paying attention? You’ll be glad you’re playing this on free spins because it's a game that takes a bit of learning, and to be honest, you wouldn’t want to stake money on it until you’ve figured out how it works. Additional respins can happen if a new scatter, of the same kind as the one that's currently active, shows up during the respin round.

Three or more scatters will start free spins. If free spins don’t get activated after repsins - you still have one final chance to get them - read on!

Warlords: Crystals of Power - The Final Chance

Basically, the warlords take pity on you. If you had two scatters to start your respins, but another scatter has shown up during the respins, you get the Final Chance feature. You’ll either get a win, paid in coins, or another scatter. If it's another scatter, it gets randomly located on reels that don’t contain any other scatters. Free spins then begin, so you’re not going to get any additional respins.

If the Final Chance doesn’t give you another scatter, you get the random win feature. This is a coin that is worth from 3 to 100 times your wager.

Phew. That's the gameplay - not simple, but totally absorbing. NetEnt Free Slots really moved up a gear with Warlords: Crystals of Power.
