Its name might sound like something from a 1950s horror movie, and that’s because it is. Premier game developers Net Entertainment has doubled up with Universal Studios to bring the 1954 cult classic “Creature from the Black Lagoon” back to life, only this time to the world of online gaming. The movie itself focuses on a group of scientists who go deep into the Amazon jungle looking for the fabled prehistoric Gill-man. However, it isn’t long before they realise that they are the hunted rather than the hunters.

The game is based on the characters from the movie itself, including the infamous Gill-man who pops up from time to time, as well as Lucas, Carl, David and Kay who turn up as symbols. Net Entertainment has been able to transfer it from the silver screen to the internet in a sleek and stylish manner through the use of great graphics and atmospheric effects, such as background mood music and an eerie introductory video leading players into the game. The odd original quote from the movie only adds to the distinctive feel of the game.

Creature from the Black Lagoon is one of NetEnt's 3D video horror slots with 5 reels and 20 paylines. While there is no progressive jackpot, the return to the player (RTP) averages 96% and it offers a maximum jackpot payout of 750 coins.

Creature from the Black Lagoon retro graphics

From the red-headed pin up to the retro images and sound clips, Net Entertainment has managed to gel the feel of the movie with the online game. The graphics are high quality, the sound quality clear and the creature itself is pretty scary. But then what else would you expect from NetEnt software. When it comes to game production they really are difficult to beat. The graphics are clearly one of the best things about this game and they really transport you to the 1950s movie itself. The introductory animation is also pretty unique helping this game to stand out within a very crowded market.

Creature from the Black Lagoon Slot

Creature from the Black Lagoon features

You’ll find the Creature from the Black Lagoon packed full of bonuses like re-spins, free spins, sticky wilds, spreading wilds and wild substitutions. Sticky wilds remain in their position until the next spin which increases the chances of winning. Wild symbols, on the other hand, can appear at random intervals and act as substitutes for everything except free spin symbols.

Creature from the Black Lagoon symbols

As you’d expect, the symbols relate to the movie, with the main characters Kay, David, Carl and Lucas making up four of the payout symbols. The lower symbols include a bowie knife, camera, oxygen tank and binoculars.

Creature from the Black Lagoon gameplay

You’ll find that there are a total of three wild symbols that can appear at random times throughout the game. Some of these symbols can be sticky, meaning that they remain stuck to the reel and provide extra respins. Once these sticky wilds appear players can win as much as 200 times what they initially bet. Not bad for a day’s work.

Creature from the Black Lagoon jackpots and bonus games

One of the highlights of the game itself is the chance to fight Gill-man himself. Should you happen to unlock some free spins during the game, you’ll be able to take aim at the creature, who should pop up when you least expect it. In order to win these free spins, you’ll need to get three, four or five free spin symbols. This qualifies you for 10, 15 and 20 free spins, although it has to be said though that getting five is a pretty rare occurrence.

Once in free spin mode, Gill-man appears grabbing Kay and pulling her into his underwater cave. You’ll need to look out for the ‘Target’ symbol that appears on reel 5 to the right of your screen. Once this appears you must shoot the creature with your harpoon to reduce his health which is divided into four levels.

Level 1: Manage to get up to two target symbols and any wild that shows up on the reels will stick there for another spin.

Level 2: Collect between three and five symbols and the first wild is triggered. One position to the left of the wild will spread out and award another respin.

Level 3: If you manage to get between six and eight targets then the second spreading wild will be triggered. The symbols will spread out evenly across the reels and you’ll receive another respin.

Level 4: Make nine hits on the monster and you’ll receive ten more free spins with the wilds that spread right and left.

You won’t know exactly the size of the jackpot you’ll be playing for as it changes each time you play the game. However, the amount of money that you put in each round will aid in determining the total size of the jackpot.

Creature from the Black Lagoon mobile

Given that this is a popular slot game for NetEnt, they’ve made sure that their mobile game is just as playable as the desktop version. While there is no specific app available for download, the game works just as well on your smartphone or tablet. So if you are more comfortable playing the game on the go then you won’t be disappointed with what NetEnt has achieved.

Creature from the Black Lagoon payout table and win potential

A table allows players to see exactly what symbols have what payouts. Kay is the top paying symbol, and if you’re lucky enough to get five of these to appear together in a payline, then you’ll receive a 750 coin payout. There is a huge potential to receive large payouts during the free spin rounds thanks largely to the fact that the sticky wild feature is in play.

There are 10 different bet levels with a total of six coin values that range from 0.01 to 0.50 and the total number of coins bet per spin dictates the level of the bet. The value of the coin represents the amount of money one coin is. The bet level multiplies the bet lines and the coin value to determine the total bet value on the spin.

The game has a number of coin values 0.01, 0.02, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20 and 0.50 which correspond to the currency you use. Through looking at the formula below, players can find out what the maximum and minimum bets they can make on the video slot. This slot is not one of NetEnt Penny Slots.

Minimum bet: bet level 1 x 20 bet line x coin value 0.01 = 0.20
Maximum bet: bet level 10 x 20 bet lines x coin value 0.50 = 100

Creature from the Black Lagoon is a medium variance game and it gives out a lot of small wins, with the wins from the free spins even being on the small side. It is, however, possible to win a lot of money from these smaller wins.

Creature from the Black Lagoon game settings

Players can customise the game to suit their needs by changing ambient music, sound effects, and even the quality of the graphics. There is also a sound button which allows players to toggle the sound on and off as they wish. And for those playing for real money, there is even a chart that shows your whole game history.

Creature from the Black Lagoon free play

Before you decide to go all in playing this slot, it’s a good idea to play it for free first. It’s recommended that you play at least 150 to 200 free spins before you decide to put any money down on Creature from the Black Lagoon or any other online slots. It’s important to determine if this is the game for you, or you could end up throwing your money down the drain. As you all probably know, every slot is different when it comes to gameplay and you have to be sure that your allocated budget is suitable for the game you’re playing.

When you start to play this for free, ensure that the bet level you have selected is similar to what you’d wager if you were playing with real cash. This way you can get an idea of whether this is the kind of game you’d like to play with real cash or not.

Creature from the Black Lagoon game settings

This slot has a number of game settings that you can adjust according to your own personal preferences. You’ll find these options at the bottom left of the screen among four buttons. Here you’ll be able to learn how to play the game, turn the autoplay option on and turn off the audio. The additional wrench button allows a number of other settings including:

-    Quick play allows you to turn the quick play mode on.
-    Animations allows you to toggle the animation on or off.
-    Ambient sound allows you to toggle the ambient sounds on or off.

-    Game history shows your totals if you’re playing with money.

Creature from the Black Lagoon mobile

Unfortunately, there is still no mobile version of this slot at the moment and the game is still very much a desktop affair and can't be played on mobile and tablet. But having said that, the desktop version is so much fun to play that the fact that it isn’t available in a mobile version can be overlooked. NetEnt has done a fantastic job at integrating this retro movie into a very entertaining slot.

This slot is one of the more unique offerings from NetEnt, thanks to its fantastic graphics, polished look and eerie gameplay. The animation and the soundtrack take you right back to the movie itself, making the game all the more interesting. In fact, this feels as much like an evolving story just as much as a slot game. You should expect a number of small payouts at regular intervals throughout the game. The only negative is that the game could offer bigger wins. If this was the case, it would be the perfect game.
