Why You’ll Love In Bloom
Slots game designers these days know that gamers are looking for fun, entertainment, excitement and the chance to win big cash prizes with their gaming, so they’re always looking for new ways to provide all those things. That’s why you’ll find games across all types of genres as they try to appeal to as wide and varied an audience as possible.
But occasionally, one of the developers pulls something so completely different out of the bag that it has gamers scratching their heads. And that’s what we thought when we first took a look at In Bloom. To be honest, we didn’t think we’d be particularly interested in playing an online slots game based around flowers, beautiful though they undoubtedly are. But then we took a closer look at the game and realised that we’d hit on something rather wonderful after all.
As the game loaded, the splash screen was filled with an abundance of flowers in shades of white, cream, orange and red. A butterfly was perched on the edge of a poppy, while the game’s title was displayed across the sky in large and worryingly curly lettering. But before we had time to wonder whether this was a bad idea, the game displayed on our screen. With a message describing the Symbol Burst feature, offering an enticing possibility of 15-of-a-kind winning lines, and we were hooked!
There’s simply no getting away from the flowers in this game, and at first glance the playing area is almost overwhelmingly overgrown with them. The game appears to take place in a formal garden laid out with flowerbeds, herbaceous borders and conifers against a backdrop of hills rising to mountain peaks in the far distance. The game’s playing area takes up the majority of the screen and is made of wood and suspended from the branch of a tree, around which is wreathed garlands of flowers.
The game’s designers clearly realised that too much of a profusion of flowers across the reels themselves would quickly become overwhelming, so they turned to the slots developer’s favourite symbol, the playing card. Using symbols to represent the 9, 10, J, Q, K and A, the icons have been kept to a single muted colour, which prevents the reels from looking overcrowded.
The other symbols on the reels are four different flowers, The Poppy is the highest-paying flower, rewarding players with £10 for landing three on a payline. Next comes the rose, which pays £8 for three matching symbols. The Calla Lily pays £3 for three-of-a-kind, whilst the Water Lily pays the least at £2.
Each flower head is perfectly drawn, and once again the artists have kept the colours slightly muted, so the general effect, once the reels start spinning, is very soothing. But it was what started happening once they stopped spinning that really drew our attention. Following any win featuring flower symbols, the Symbol Burst feature randomly kicks in: other flowers start growing alongside some of the winning symbols, creating up to 15 different flower heads along a winning payline. Since each type of flower has a different value, the maximum amount on offer is £200 for 15 Water Lilies up to a highly impressive £1000 for 15 Poppies.
We expected the music for this game to be almost folky, but in fact we were surprised to discover a rather lilting waltz played by what sounds like a full orchestra. Gentle and melodic, the music definitely enhances the gameplay as far as we’re concerned, but if you find that it’s not to your taste, you have the option of turning the sound down or muting it entirely.
Our overall impression, once we’d taken In Bloom for a few spins, is of a surprisingly addictive high-stakes game that offers plenty of opportunities for a major win for those who thrive on risk. For those who adopt a more cautious approach, In Bloom is a rather lovely way to while away some spare time.
How to Play In Bloom
With 40 fixed paylines in place for every spin, the only decision that the player of In Bloom needs to make is the value of coin that they play with. In this case particularly, the word ‘coin’ is a complete misnomer, but it dates back to the earliest days of the slot machine industry when players had to physically insert coins into the appropriate slot to trigger the gameplay. In the case of In Bloom, coins wouldn’t get you very far, as the minimum coin amount is £1, which is multiplied by 50 for each spin of the reels - that’s £1 per payline, plus £10 extra for the Symbol Feature - although since this isn’t optional, it seems a little disingenuous.
With a coin value that starts at £1 and goes up to £50, this gives a wagering sum of between £50 and £500 for every spin, so it’s no surprise that this game is attracting the attention of high-rollers. But as we’ve seen, the Symbol Burst feature means that rewards for winning lines can be extremely generous.
Once you’ve settled on the amount you wish to wager, it’s time to hit the Spin button. Winning lines are highlighted for you, while the Symbol Burst feature adds extra excitement to every win that features any of the individual flower symbols. The position of the symbol on the reels dictates the maximum number of flowers that it can produce. One or two flower heads can appear on any reels, but three flower heads can only occur on the second, third and fourth reels. Meanwhile, four or five flower heads can only bloom on flower heads that land on the central reel. Don’t worry about keeping count of the number of flowers on show, as each total is displayed at the top of the screen following the Symbol Burst feature.
If you’re settling in for a lengthy session of spinning the reels, you’ll probably want to spend less time hitting Spin so that you concentrate on the action unfolding on your screen. If this is the case, there’s a useful Autoplay button that allows you to select a number of automatic spins, rising from 10 up to 50 in increments of 10. Setting this feature saves you time and effort, but if you want to take back control of the spins before your chosen number has completed, simply hit the Autospin button again to cancel the feature.
In Bloom Additional Symbols
Unusually for an online slots game, there’s no Wild symbol on the reels of In Bloom, but with the excellent Symbol Burst feature triggering so frequently it’s hardly missed in this game. There is, however, a Bonus Symbol of a butterfly landing on a blue ball ornament. This Bonus Symbol can only appear on the third reel, but when it appears stacked on all three rows it brings a cash reward of 60x your current total bet. When this occurs it also triggers the Garden Bonus.
The other Scatter symbol is the butterfly on its own. Although this symbol doesn’t have its own paytable, when three butterflies appear anywhere across the reels - and this includes the previously mentioned Bonus Symbol butterfly too - the Garden Bonus round is triggered.
In Bloom Garden Bonus
Three or more butterflies appearing anywhere on the reels will take the player to the Garden Bonus, which is an exciting round of Free Spins offering a choice of additional features to enhance any wins that you achieve.
At the start of the Free Spins Garden Bonus round you’ll be offered a choice of Free Spin options, according to which garden you’d like to enter. Select the Poppy Garden Bonus, and you’ll be awarded 5Free Spins. The Rose Garden Bonus provides you with eight Free Spins, the Calla Lily Garden Bonus gives ten Free Spins, while the lowest-paying Water Lily Garden Bonus will offer you twelve Free Spins. Throughout your Garden Bonus round, the reels will only contain the playing card symbols and your chosen flower, with the Symbol Burst feature promising some highly tempting rewards.
In Bloom Bonus Bump
With such a generous Garden Bonus feature on offer, it’s astonishing that In Bloom offers a further reward to players once the round has finished. Before returning to the usual reels of the base game, the player is taken to another section of the garden and invited to choose from a selection of options. Your prize will be between 1 and 50 times your original wager that triggered the Garden Bonus for you.
